My Cat Eats My Plants
    #4353539 - 06/29/05 11:27 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

I'd like to expand my ethno garden. I have some cacti that she stays away from, but all the flowers and plants in the past get their leaves chewed on sometimes. Would there be any problem with her eating some salvia or HBWR or any else?

My cat has had his way with the leaves on my Salvia plant three times now. I'm considering putting it outside to get it's bearings and flourish for the rest of the summer, and my cat is indoor, so that remedies that problem for me.

What I would suggest is purchasing some "Cat Grass" seeds from a local pet store. Cats are carnivorous, but evidently they like to chew on vegetation from time to time. So you plant these seeds, and in 10 days or whatever, the grass is grown for your cat to mitigate that need it has. If this doesn't satisfy your cat and he still attempts to feast on your ethnos, squirt him with a spray bottle any time he's going at the one's he's not supposed to, and that may help him differentiate which is for him to chew on, hopefully.

My cat has never been harmed by ingesting Salvia's leaves either. He does act differently, and the first two times I found him when he did it, he looked like he was in a pretty meditative mood!

I've trained the cat to stay away from my cacti (squirt bottle), and I haven't given a shit about the plants she ate. I was thinking about the cat tripping out or something poisonous.

Grrr my previous kat took out 4 or 5 of my young baby plants. Needless to say the kat is no longer with me, let alone allowed in my garden.

yeah my cat ate all the leaves off of my Mimosa hostilis plant, then proceeded to dig up the roots afterwards!

she's a weird cat, though I'm not sure if it's because of that or her nature

when I got a list of toxic plants/substances from the vet, it included things like cannabis, jimson weed, morning glory, poinsettias, milkweed, onion and garlic, chocolate, etc.... but no Mimosa, Salvia or or HBWR.

So I'm assuming it's allight.  That being said, they are also very unusual plants.  Let google be your friend, perhaps you can find more info.  Or call a local vet.

My cat will take a bite out of everything, except the vast quantities of catnip i have growing. He does like it and is effected by catnip. He leaves the growing plants alone for some odd reason  He likes chewing on bamboo leaves i've noticed.  I've got seeds for Catgrass(wheat) and Cat Treat (ryegrass) that i'm gonna plant soon for him.  Probably wont care for it...

My cat never liked actually eating catnip either. But If I put some dried on the ground for her she'd sniff at it like mad and roll around in it and go right mad with out even ingesting any...

Spraying a kitty with a squirt bottle usually wont get you on their good side.
Plant the herb rue around your prized plants instead. They absolutely hate the smell.
