dunking a casing?
    #4356723 - 06/30/05 09:03 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I've had a lot of trouble getting some cased birdseed to fruit, and I'm pretty sure the reason is that the substrate got really dried out in the incubator. Is there a good way to dunk an existing casing, or introduce more water to a jar of colonized birdseed? I've tried just wetting the casing layer and it doesn't seem to help much.

Well your problem would be the water content not being correct in the first place...not as it was in the incubator
If the birdseed is totally colonized you can submerge the entire contents for 12-24hrs.

For water content I used a formula I've been successful with in the past - soak grain overnight, then drain and pc. I tried a new incubator setup this time which was difficult to control, and spent a lot of time at too high a temperature; some jars did not fully colonize, and have dry, uncolonized grain in them.

Any way to get water to the existing casings? I'd rather not give up on them.

well i would suggest just don't use the uncolonized grain and use the rest..Because it is very hard to get grain to colonize after a certain point.
Trying to inject water into the jars gives you a far greater chance of contamination~

If you have already cased/introduced to fruiting conditions how long have they been in the fruiting chamber? If you have already introduced to fruiting and are certain it isnt going to pin you can submerge the whole casing for 12-24hrs.
