magic powder
    #4356120 - 06/30/05 05:50 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I've just been watching a documentary show on TV, and they were talking about this new discovery:

I'm not sure I got the details right, but it involves burning gold, and istead of getting melted metal, getting some powder white substance, that is unlike anything chemistry and physics has encountered before.
In science it's called "exotic matter"

Apperently, the substance reacts to temperature in a really wierd way.
When it gets cooled down, its weight icreases, when it gets warmed in the lab its weight is decreased by unusually high amounts (like down to 40% or more) After it gets heated to a very high temperature it's mass is not detectable any more (it weights zero), and its not there any more, but it hasn't waporized, because when you cool down the "frying pen" it gets back there, a white poweder.

The theory that is used to explain it goes deep into quantum physics.
They say, that the mass does not drop really, it only punches a hole into another dimension and as you heat it up more it transfers there.

The experiment involved going arond in the experimental pan with a tool, which would scrable the structure of the poweder in case if it was there but only somehow invisible. but when the powder comes back, it is back in the same structure as it was before, meaning the tool didn't affect how it was laying in the pan because it wasn't there.

The powder is consumable, and is a form of a drug that affects the brain in positive ways.

Some people connect it to aincient egiptian magic powder that pharaons made by burning metal, and used to balance the brain and change states of consciousness.
Some allso connect it to the Bible story when moses burned the gold cow, and fed the people with the powder that he got from it.

I'm lazy to search for links because I've gotten enough info from TV, but if someone wants to know about it more, and founds some links, you may post it here.

I know this is more science , but we discuss wierd science all the time here, so I thought, what the heck

well that sounds pretty interesting, but you will soon have links demanded of you. What channel was this on? what what the program called?

I highly doubt these unusual properties result from simply burning gold, though. I'm no chemist, but I'm pretty sure you would just end up with metal-oxides...

I'm going to look for links now.

I'm trying to look this up, and I'm only finding references in theological pages, or pages related to alchemy, nothing in science yet, which is making me skeptical.

If someone finds some good science links regarding this, please post them.

the only thing I can find about "exotic matter" seems to be almost completely hypothetical.

Same here. OldWoodSpecter: Are you sure they were discussing something that is reality now...or were they just explaining it in hypothetical terms?

How odd...

It seems pretty clear that it couldn't have been a drug with properties that are good for people if it's completely hypothetical. This sounds like something some people have faith in, rather than something real.

This was not a show about this thing only, only a section was devoted to it, mostly there was this guy talking about experiments they were doing.
Accoarding to him, it was actually done in a lab, but I drifted away, the stuff about dimensions caught my attention, so my mind tuned in after they described how they got that stuff in the lab.

But he said they did measure its mass, and did control the temperature

It's a new thing, and they are currently presenting it at the Nexus conention in Amsterdam.

I don't know what to make of it just as you.

and as for what chanel, it wouldn't be any good to tell you that because the show was Croatian (name 3 Croatian shows  )
but the guy they were talking with was an American

p.s. by the way, the gold that it is made from is "monoatomic gold"

Nexus conventions appear to be about science fiction...

I googled monatomic gold and all that comes up seems to be new agey herbal supplement type places... are you sure you weren't watching an infomercial?

Nexus convention is about border areas of science like UFO's, paranormal etc.

I think it might not be real.

There's no scientific articles I can find on it anywhere, I think the people involved might not be scientists.

well, some people use it so it is a word.

anyway, how would you call a substance that is not tied in molecules, but comes as a bunch of atoms?

yeah it's monatomic, as in having a single atom in a molecule

and who cares if they aren't "scientists" so long as they can back their claim.

The concept of Exotic Matter isn't new. All it means is that a substance doesn't follow the classical (Newtonian) rules of physics. This doesn't make it magical, but it does illustrate limitations in the Newtonian theory of mechanics.

Liquid helium is such a substance; it has zero viscosity. If you place it inside a toroidal (donut-shaped) container and give it a swirl, it will continue to swirl forever without any additional energy input.

If you place it in a beaker, it will climb up the inner wall of the beaker and spill onto the surface the beaker is sitting on in apparent defiance of gravity. This is why a special dewar is required to contain it.

This does seem to violate the rules of Classical Physics, but if you apply the principles of Quantum Mechanics to the fluid, you find that it behaves exactly as expected.

Liquid helium is so odd, that it will not solidify even at absolute zero at one atmosphere. The failure of helium to solidify in laboratory experiments where it was cooled to tiny fractions of one Kelvin above absolute zero, for a long time, could not be explained until the fluid was analyzed using the tools of Quantum Mechanics.

All fluids behave this way, but if the temperature of the fluid is more than a couple Kelvin, the thermal effects mask the quantum effects. This is why liquid helium is called a Quantum Fluid.

Another example of what could be called Exotic Matter is the planet Mercury. According to classical physics the observed orbit of Mercury precesses in contradiction to the predictions of Newtonian Celestial Mechanics. But, calculate the orbit using General Relativity, and you find the observed orbit matches the theoretical prediction perfectly.

I don't think monoatomic is a word.

Monoatomic is a word. It's used to distinguish diatomic molecules, like O2, from monoatomic ones like He.

An oxygen atom is electronically unstable by itself and will pair up with another oxygen atom at the first opportunity to form a stable O2 molecule.

Helium, however, is a noble gas and forms no compounds at all (except in very extreme conditions), so it forms a stable monoatomic molecule by itself.

e=mc^2. For any significant change in mass, a large amount of energy
would have to shift.

Think 4 alarm fire in the laboratory to reduce mass by a few micrograms.

edit: this was in reply to the first post. Sorry for confusion.
