steam pasteurization tech
    #4355760 - 06/30/05 02:36 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Hello everybody, I have read about many ways of pasteurize compost, and recently found this method on the web. ( what do the experts think about?) I am thinking about using a mix of composted horse manure and vermiculite...

Country type pasteurization
1. Prepare Equipment

1. Steaming pot country style - use 200 liters drums.
2. Firewood.
3. Iron or bamboo screen - round shape height 5 inches to fit inside drum.

2. Clean steam pot and add about 4 inches water.

3. Place iron or wooden screen so it comes out 1 inch higher than water.

4. Place bags in pasteurization system until full (between 80 - 100 bags).

5. Cover everything with double layers of old rice bags.

6. Place plastic over rice bags and close tightly.

7. Light fire and maintain temperature constant for a period of 3 -4 hours from the time temperature reaches 90 - 100oC which is the moment steam starts coming out continuously.

Important: Temperature must remain constant and there should always be water in the drum.

8. When completed, take the firewood out of the stove.

9. Let cool down for approximately 20 minutes. Take off cover bags and let cool down more.

10. Transfer bags to inoculation area.

straw, its working very nice..

if anyone cares,
my fast and WRONG reply to the thread is below .. damn ganja

old n wrong reply
now that would be internet plagiarism.

the pics are all from "mushroom cultivation for people with disablities"

Sounds interesting. A friend has a pasturizing system where he has a wallpaper steamer that goes into an icechest with a wire shelf. He checks temps with a compost thermometer that sticks into the horse poo through the side of the icechest. He says this works for him.

You might want to read THIS POST about pasturizing bulk compost/h/poo or whatever.

It works well with 50 lb size grain bags, (1/2 full of bulk substrate & flat on a rack).

Empty grain bags can be had at most feed stores, for cheap.

In the above tech they say:" Light fire and maintain temperature constant for a period of 3 -4 hours from the time temperature reaches 90 - 100oC which is the moment steam starts coming out continuously"

Does it mean water temperature?
if so what should be the best steam temperature to keep for pausterization? betwen 65?C and 80?C???

depends what you're pasteurising. in most cases, longer is better, but in GGMM Stamets did some research showing that after a certain period (i think it was 12h) there is a negative impact of increased time as nutrients get broken down.

bottom line: 6h should be okay.

You can also use a household plug in portable steam cleaner, rigged up to a LARGE beer/pop camping type cooler & steam/pressure pasteurize a fairly large of substrate, in a few hours.

Unit above retails for $149. I bought it at a thrift store for $6, good as NEW (frugal agar).
Little unit will kick out high pressure steam for 30 minutes. Then - refill & go again.
