experimental casing--need help
    #4355928 - 06/30/05 05:07 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I am just finishing my first try with PF cakes, and they were a success for the most part. Now, when the final cake was birthed, there was no room in the fruiting chamber. So I decided to try and case it. So I used moist verm for bottom layer, crumbled cake on top, and a sterilized Jiffy Mix layer on top. The chamber its in is kept at or very close to 80% humidity, with 12/12 light. After the case was made, it was incubated until signs of mycelium showed, then it was moved to the chamber and lightly patched. This is it two weeks in the chamber. Now I am by far no expert on casings, but the myc just keeps growing out, but no pins. I didnt think the myc was supposed to be on the surface when pinning begins. Here are some pics...

I can't see it very well. Are you sure it's mycelium?

Ok, thanks kronny. After cold-shock, should I patch it up, or leave the myc exposed and put in the fruiting chamber?

The myc should be visible before pinning happens. You should only patch on parts or the casing where there is lots of myc, if other parts still have to colonise. You should be aiming for a casing which is colonised at the same time, then pinning will occur everywhere at once and you get a more even pinset and flush.
