New jiffy mix....no verm?
    #4353968 - 06/30/05 01:43 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Just wondering if anyone has tried or even seen the new jiffy mix that only has peat moss, perlite, and lime. I bought a bad just to check it out.....just curious if anyone else has used it yet.  :stoned: :crazy2:

I use it quite often. It's great! Grab yourself a bag of vermiculite as well for adding some moisture buffing. Just mix it 60/40 Jiffy/verm at field capacity and case your substrates.

Do you sterilize your jiffy/verm?

what exactly does field capacity mean? And do you do it for both the jiffy and verm or just verm?

I don't sterilize any of my casing materials. But doing it doesnt' hurt either. I use lime in mine and that holds back any molds from growing for a while. My casing materials are pretty high on the ph scale. LOL! Anyways, field capacity is when you can squeeze the material in your hand and only a drop or 2 of water comes out of the material. Just a smidge past hydrated. Lets say you have 6 cups of Jiffy and 4 cups of vermiculite. Mix the 2 together in a bowl with H20 well. Then just take a handful of the casing material and squeeze out the excess moisture until it's field capacity and apply it to your fully colonized substrate. Jiffy contains lime, so there's no need to use any more if you don't want to. But a level tablespoon added to that mixture certainly doesn't hurt either.

Yep! Walmart or Lowes exc. You can score big bags of it that are 3 cubic yards for about $11-12 if you want a lot for bulk stuff. It's not Jiffy, but a seed starter as well with the same ingredients.

Many brands exist, all work, I use the same. Just look and make sure it doesnt have extra shit. Peat moss is good, lime is good, perlite is ok, verm is good, wood is bad, but you may find that all list wood in the ingredients..its usually not much or a problem, I've used that before. I add 2-5% powdered oyster shells and a bunch of verm, untill it looks right.
