Someone tell me about trip-hop/whatever
    #4355083 - 06/30/05 01:35 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Ok me and my friend are starting to get a boner for some new music but I really don't even know what we're bonering over.

Example - DJ Shadow - Endtroducing

What exactly do you call it? Who else can I listen to? What DJs? What producers? What are these genres called?

Thanks

I kinda know what you mean... DJ Shadow is good. Try some Blackalicious or the streets if you looking for some trippy hip hop. Im not really into hip hop but thats all i can recall right now  :thumbup:

Tripped out hiphop? I think...

Many such labels are vague, esp. that one. Check out some Rob Swift.

yea, there really isnt a definition for Trip Hop. Look up The Bristol Sound, and you can learn from there.

Listen to a CD called "Mushroom Jazz." I'd suggest the 5th album (MJ5). Check out the artists on the playlist and branch out. It's good stuff!

I've only heard 1 and 5. I've tripped to 5 at least twice now (or at least listened to a few tracks on it). Be warned though.. going from Mushroom Jazz 5 to Joe's Garage is a good way to set up for a bad trip.

I don't know if there's a good definition for trip hop out there. As Morcheeba said, it's just a term some a journalist invented. IMO, Massive Attack's Blue Lines was the first album to really define the style. And Portishead, Morcheeba, Tricky, others kinda grew from it. Almost all British.

DJ Shadow is kind of a different animal. If you're into him, look at DJ Krush, Cut Chemist, RJD2, Dan the Automator.

Excerpt from Wikipedia:

Trip hop (also known as the Bristol sound) is a term coined by United Kingdom dance magazine Mixmag, to describe a musical trend in the mid-1990s; trip hop is downtempo electronic music that grew out of England's hip hop and house scenes. Characterized by a reliance on breakbeats and a sample-heavy sound pioneered by Coldcut's remix of Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid in Full", trip hop gained notice via popular artists such as Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky, and rock-influenced sound groups such as Ruby, California's DJ Shadow, and the UK's Howie B. Londoners Morcheeba and Glideascope are also often associated with this sound.

Getting farther away from hip hop and more into trip hop may I suggest:

* Mark Farina's MUSHROOM JAZZ SERIES
* Anything on the Ninja Tune Label (Mr Scuff, Herbalizer, Amon Tobin)
* Nightmares on Wax
* Handsom Boy Modelling School
* Portishead
* Tommy Guererro (pro skater gone trip hop artist)
* Photek's album, Modus Operandi
