Will any old seashells do as CaCO3 or do they have to be oysters?
    #4354885 - 06/30/05 12:19 PM (12 years, 2 hours ago)

I live near the sea and all my garden shops only have CaO.
Will any seashells do?

EDIT: checking google it seems they will work. I would still like to hear if people have tried it. They are probably very hard to grind up correctly

Out of curiosity, and I didn't want to start a new thread over this, has anyone ever used Tums or Rolaids as a source for calcium carbonate? I had to teach some kids once how to make toothpaste, and the teachers guide involved using calcium carbonate, and getting it by grinding up tums.

Anyone experimented with this? I think I may.

Never thought of that. I would boil them up first to dissolve away the salt, they must do this with commercial oyster shell.

What I found of seashells:

The shell is usually made of nacre, an organic mixture of outer layers of horny conchiolin (a scleroprotein), followed by an intermediate layer of calcite or aragonite, and then a layer of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the form of platy crystals.

Seems like alot of seashells have other stuff and layers besides the calcium carbonate....

No, but blackout, you do know eggshells can be used too right?

And I just got a 50 pound bag of pulverized limestone from walmart the other day, for like 1.97...

Yeah but I will be eating eggs for weeks! I go down the beach a lot now that it is summer. ON google I have found that a lot of beach sand has high calcium carbonate levels 70-95%, ready gound sea-shells. I may ask the locals if they know, there are these old guys always on the beach who know everything about it

I say, its expensive as hell to buy a case of tums or rolaids, since you need a good amount of powder..when you can easily get pulv. limestone at walmart. I'm sure 50 pounds of tums costs alot more then 2 bucks.

Tums and Rolaids work as well. But like Scat mentioned, the cost would be too much compared to a $2 bag of shells or lime stone. Not to mention that these antacids also contain sugars that bacteria will enjoy.
