Well... I have heard they are quite smart. And they can change color and shape to adapt to their surroundings. So from this I would have to say that I don't know. :frown: I am not smart, damn it.

Isn't this some Terence McKenna theory? Can't quite remember now, but remember thinking it was bullshit at the time I read it in 'Food of the Gods'.

I have heard they are quite smart

If you put a crab in a closed pickle jar and toss it in an aquarium with an octopus, it will attack the crab a few times until it realizes there's some glass in the way, then over the course of a few hours, it will, by trial and error, eventually figure out how to open the jar and eat the crab.

Each subsequent jar is immediately opened and the crab is eaten.

Put a new octopus in an aquarium by the first and let it watch the jar-opening / crab-eating event once, and it will, having never been exposed to a jar, open its own jar and eat the crab as quickly as the experienced octopus does.

It learns by watching. Very few other animals can do this.

Factoid: the plural of octopus is octopuses, not octopi because the root of the word is Latin, not Greek.

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.
