12 inches of substrate in a rubbermaid?
    #4354109 - 06/30/05 04:20 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

why is it considered to be ideal for a substrate depth to be only 6-8 inches....in TMC a depth of twelve is considered acceptable... other than thermogenesis and possibly a lack of air exchange to the inner depths of the tub seems to be the only drawbacks... i ould think that a cased layer of straw 12" deep would support a larger 2nd and third maybe a fouirth flush... is this not correct?

Are you sure TMC recommended 12" for cubensis? I thought he recommended less for cubes, I'll have to check.

EDIT: You are right. he says Straw or compost should be filled to a depth of 6-12 inches. At 12" is it going to generate enough heat so as it will not need additional heating, at say an ambient of 20C (68F) will it be brought up to 24C (75F). I am limited by surface area size so is it really feasible growing a cubic substrate of say 12x12x12" with a 2" casing layer?

Fungophiliac, you really discount this thermogenesis as not important, but the problem with deep beds is that you can't hit the right temperature range throughout them. I can tell you that if you use a high spawn rate and your incubation chamber doesn't happen to be about 60F, there is no way in hell you will keep the core of a 12"-deep bed under about 95F. And if you do use a 60F room, the outside will be too cold to colonize right. Also, if you do things right, 5 or 6" of chopped straw will get you four or five heavy, thick flushes. There is no point of going deeper.

But if you were to grow in a 12x12x12" like I mentioned, you would be loosing heat through the sides, so it would be kept cooler. If your only restriction was surface area I see no problem going to 12" instead of 6", straw and grain are cheap. I wonder how much extra you would yeild with 12x12x12 rather than 12x12x6, I wouldnt expect 100% more but if I were to get 25% more I would consider it.

Off to check the growlogs now...

I'm pretty sure you wont notice a difference after 6-8 inches..and I see problems with heat...although I think if 70 or below, it might be ok as far as heat...as long as you have alot of heat dissapation through the top...

I find it intresting that TMC reccomends a 6-12" substrate depth... I wouldnt think that after 6-8" you'd notice any difference like scatman said, but if the TMC suggests it, it just may make a difference, more flushes possibly?

Well you know, maybe with straw or compost, and I just noticed the original poster is asking specifically of straw....still I dont think your gonna notice much of a difference from doubling the substrate...maybe more flushes..but straw sucks ass for later flushes as it is usually. Who knows, but I see straw being much much less of a problem with heat, I think straw could be done without issue.

I do a lot of straw subs and really, 12"s is a bit much. 6"s is perfect for straw in my experiences for tubs. If you plan on using a thick bulk straw tek, go with Vision's laudry baskets for a fool proof tek for a lot of straw. Big mushrooms as well.
