the thing that irritates my ass about this one is that, if i want to see the max RH, i have to press the min/max button, and it shows the max for an instant before returning to the minimum.
thx for the reply

you shouldnt have to, it's the current readings that you want to view, pressing the max button may show lower than the current RH

The min and max are records of the MINIMUM and MAXIMUM readings that the hygrometer saw in some time interval. Neither of those are what you want. You want the one that is neither min or max. That is the current RH.

If you are running cakes, the current RH should run 98%-100%. If you are running a casing, it should run about 95%. If you have had trouble with green mold or the like with the current casing, you can let the RH fall to 87-90% or so if you have a decent thickness casing. That will keep the green more under control. Of course, if you ever see any green, you need to cover it with baking soda immediately to prevent it from spreading.

Huh? Are you serious? It's the only way I know to stop green mold from spreading throughout a casing once it appears. I thought everyone used baking soda for that purpose. Oh, and yeah, I tried H2O2. That crap doesn't work at all.

You just cover the visible mold with baking soda? What happens with all the microscopic mold spores hanging out in your chamber?

LengthyFellow, there are always green mold spores in any place unless you are running HEPAs 24/7 and don't use peat moss at all in your casing. Improper conditions or poor casing colonization give them a chance to take hold. If they do, you can kill a small area quickly by putting baking soda over it. If you really messed up and have a lot, you'd be better just chucking the whole tray. As for extra mold spores hanging around, they don't scare me a bit if the casing run was strong. The mycelium protects itself against mold.

Believe me I have tried many ways of extracting mold from a casing. They do not work. When you try to cut out mold, you open the center of grains around the infection. An opened grain, is an invitation for more green mold. It will come back in a matter of a day or two. The ONLY way to stop it from spreading that I know about is the use of baking soda.

Here is an example of a tray where the mycelium run through the casing was weak which resulted in green mold in two places. Now, I slipped on the baking soda in one place and released WAY too much (use a funnel to control the application better), but you get the idea anyway:

If I would not have used baking soda on this tray, I very well might have lost most of the tray to green mold. As it is, the fruiting wasn't too bad, except the gaping baking soda holes.
