legal age to smoke (not buy)

my friend is 16 and his parents wont let him smoke (cigs). he told me that you have to be 18 to BUY, but only 16 to legally smoke. is this true? he says its basiclly a law for tobacco companies to hook kids. i dont care what their intent, i just want to know if you can legally smoke at age 16. This is is washington state by the way.

Most states it is against the law to smoke under the age of 18. I know for a fact you can smoke at any age in New York/New Jersey

It used to be that in a lot of states, you only had to be 16 to buy smokes, but the anti-smoking faction put a stop to that right quickly.....

There's no federal law against minors having tobacco.

I think it's a state issue. I know you can get a citation for underage tobacco possesion in my town. I think it's different with every state... or maybe it's by city?

In Michigan you can get a small fine, a civil infraction I think, if you are caught smoking cigs as a minor.

a cop cought this little kid i used to tech to skate,he was like 16 or something,the cop just took his ciggs.

i'm pretty sure in GA you can,at least i've never heard anyone getting shit for it,maybe there just lax about it....hmmm..
