death and emotional reactions
    #4352109 - 06/29/05 07:02 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

There was this guy that was killed a couple of days ago on a railroad, on the spot where I cross (or walk along it) it almost every day.
He was laying on the tracks (not in between them, allthough papers said that to let the people sleep better) when the train came, so I assume he was cut in half, as I've seen how dogs and cats get cut in half on the railroad. The police thinks it was a suicide, obduction didn't find any drugs in his blood. The train was just leaving the station so he was maybe going like 30-40 mph, usually it goes 100, I can only imagine what a butchery that would have been (out on the open at 100 mph)

Anyway, the next day I was walking on that spot, there were candles and stuff put there by some folks,
but I really didn't feel anything, I was just really currious about how he was killed, you know, was he like beheaded, was he just draged until the train stoped, or was he pulled under the train (it is a low train (little room below it), something similar to your Amtrack Genesis machine), I didn't feel sorrow, nor did I even feel the childish goosebums connected with the grousome death, it felt like nothing had happened.

It's funny, that spot is like cursed, before this guy there was this dead cat rotting there for like months (now only bones are left, but I remember it when it was like a live one, only sleeping), it's like the curve of death

My reaction, or lack of it, would make me a monster to common folks

But what do you people think? Am I a monster?

Did you know the guy? If not then you're really not a monster. Well over 6 billion people in the world. Can't care everytime someone dies otherwise you'll be pretty damn sad 24/7.

No I didn't know the guy, but the normal reaction of people around me was that they are sad, and feel it is a tragedy because he was only 25

But usually I'd feel a little tense on places where people have died, but this time it was like a horror scene, but It felt like nothing had happened

I wouldn't say you're a "monster" at all. If I didn't know him, I'd pity the poor guy and maybe tsk-tsk at the unfortunate circumstances of his passing, but beyond that, I wouldn't feel much either....

Well some might say you have an enlightened approch to death. We will all die. Everyone of us. Now or later, but really what does that matter. In a few years or a few decades no one will even remember that you lived most likely. Now if you can do that with a loved one. Now that would be something.

I have never truly felt remorse or any other emotion at the passing of even a loved one or relative. Does that make me a monster?

I consider death a natural part of life, and in my opinion it's better to cherish the times you've had and the positive influence of that person on your life as opposed to mourning your personal loss.

I would not like to do that with a loved one, becuase of sense of duty I would put in some emotions into the event, just to say goodbie.
It is normal to cry for loved ones. Maybe there are religions and philosophies that say otherwise, but they say it because the don't "believe" in this world, even thought they were created in this world.

For all the rest of us who live here on earth, and eat and exist materially, death is a loss, and nobody should be ashamed to cry because of death.

Of course, asking Why!!? Why!!?!and cursing the universe is another thing, but a healthy cry as an emotional goodbie is not a bad thing

I do agree on some things that you say, but sometimes refusing to cry can be damaging to your psyche, and cause depression

When sad, why not cry? Like you say, it is healthy to let it out. Then you can move on with life. But if you don't feel sad... :mushroom2:

Yea, not being able to feel the emotion at all is a different thing, I'm talking about not admiting to yourself or supressing emotions for the sake of some old religion, that's plain stupid

"But what do you people think? Am I a monster?"

You seem really bored by it...your tone indicates it. A monster would be gleeful...assuming monsters take delight in death and destruction. If I was a monster I would. Maybe you are a bored monster...or the tragedy was too pedestrian to warrant your glee...do you want to be a monster?

A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

Are you saying monsters don't get bored? Maybe they get tired of shrieking teen-age girls and having to wash off all of the blood & gunk after a gore-fest...

Your just protecting yourself man. If we all let tragedy affect us, we would never move on with life. It's not like you knew him, or he meant anything to you. I say cut yourself some slack.
