Consider the octopus.
    #4351790 - 06/29/05 07:39 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I've heard that there is a distinct part of our brains only in use when watching faces. Is this for real?

If true, how does that relate to the octopus?

Well... I have heard they are quite smart. And they can change color and shape to adapt to their surroundings. So from this I would have to say that I don't know. :frown: I am not smart, damn it.

It only relates when in the Octopus' Garden, in the shade.

you would have to know what all the other parts of the brain are doing before it made any sense.

Isn't this some Terence McKenna theory? Can't quite remember now, but remember thinking it was bullshit at the time I read it in 'Food of the Gods'.

Yeah, Terence talked about this in that book (poor book imo). Though my reason for asking is clearing up some mindstuff imprinted during my last trip a year back. It deals with visual communication.

I was wondering whether this part of the brain somehow got boosted in some states of awareness, and sensitized to a sufficient degree of reading through "small movements" or something.

Just wanted to throw it out to "read" responses

I have heard they are quite smart

If you put a crab in a closed pickle jar and toss it in an aquarium with an octopus, it will attack the crab a few times until it realizes there's some glass in the way, then over the course of a few hours, it will, by trial and error, eventually figure out how to open the jar and eat the crab.

Each subsequent jar is immediately opened and the crab is eaten.

Put a new octopus in an aquarium by the first and let it watch the jar-opening / crab-eating event once, and it will, having never been exposed to a jar, open its own jar and eat the crab as quickly as the experienced octopus does.

It learns by watching. Very few other animals can do this.

Factoid: the plural of octopus is octopuses, not octopi because the root of the word is Latin, not Greek.

3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.
