My apartment complex runins

Hi.
I just moved into an apartment with my girlfriend, and i dont feel very secure. I am not doing much illegal, other than smoking pot. no cultivation, but what if i was? This stuff is stupid.
When i moved in, i let them know what was broken in the apartment, and about 9 days later when my girlfriend and I were sleeping they decided to just walk right in after a couple knocks. It scared the shit out of my girlfriend, and luckily the guy was cool.
We went to the office, and let them know that our cat might run out if they come in without calling or leaving notice. She told me that they will always leave notice unless we put in the request, but pretty much what she said is they have a key and can come in whenever they want.
I tried to emphesize that my cat would run away if they let her out, and she said she might be able to have them call before any maintenence, but not guarenteed.
Well anyways, 10 minutes ago someone came tot he door, knocked. My girlfriend called me "someones at the door" so i come down the stairs, and there he is. They come in uninvited, and when questioned, he said that he posted a notice yesterday, that we never found.
I am getting one of those chain type locks for when we are home, because we dont need them walking around while we are home having fun, or sleeping or something you know. Who knows what we are wearing, and what we have laying out.
I would also like to change the locks, but im pretty sure this in in violation of the lease terms. But I have caught them twice in the last 2 weeks coming into my home uninvited. I do not know if there have been times they have come in without me home, because im sure they dont leave any notice saying they were here either.
I dont know what to do, this is a pretty nice place, but not super up class either. I dont wanna break my lease either and try moving, but man they are idiots in the office too.
I was int he office one day when someone was putting in a repair request "I wont be home, but i can leave you my key" he said. The girl at the desk said "WE dont need that, we have master keys to all teh apartments" ...
I know all complexes do, but they seem overly happy to announce it, and abuse their rights.
Any suggestions, other than saying i have a dog(not allowed)?

Check over your lease, they have to give you at least (here in canada) 24 hours notice before they come in to repair anything.
And if your not into law, go to a lawyer or a college, I'm sure if you pay some undergrad a few dollars to look it over and see if they are breaking the terms and if they are, threaten them with a lawsuit :P I'm sure they will give you tons of notice now

Change your lock. Their supposed to give you 24 hr notice in FL unless theres a emegency anyways. It may be different if you call for a repair and arent home though Im not sure on that one. If you change the lock and they find out the worst that will happen is that they will complain to you about it or have a locksmith open it if its an emergency. When my friend and I were growing we would never call the land lord no matter what. We even had a fridge break on us and went without. If you think they are intruding on your privacy don't be afraid to complain to the main office if your not growing then you have nothing to worry about. Just don't leave shit laying around in plain sight.

Same here in nevada, they have to give you 24 hours notice unless it's an emergency. My lease says I can't change the lock to my place, and I'm pretty sure most leases are the same. I have a webcam program on my comp that lets me use my webcam as a motion detector. Set the sensitivity of it and turn it on and you're set. If anything sets it off it will record what it sees. You could check and make sure they're not coming in uninvited. Make sure you keep your valuables locked up in something that can't be stolen. Good idea with the change lock on the door, that should be fine with the lease. What I would do is wait for them to come in uninvited and the pull my gun on the guy and scare him into making sure you know he's coming, but that's just me.

Don't change the lock, that's illegal.
It's illegal for them to just walk in like that. You are leasing so it's temporarily your property. If they just barge in, tell them you feel your privacy is being violated - mention that you have a girlfriend and they better understand. If they don't, threaten to call the police.

Yes, you will get in trouble by pointing a gun at someone. It doesn't matter even if it is your apt. Do you think the police will like it if someone walks into your apt (who works for the company) and you pull a gun? It doesn't matter. The cop is going to arrest you because that's threatening someones life. This isn't a joke. The cops WILL arrest you.
Is the apt. complex a part of a bigger organization? Like say is it owned by a company? If so, talk to them about it.
If not, tell them they are invading your privacy and if it happens again, you will be forced to call the police as it is unlawful for them to barge in as the contract states. Or you can just say fuck em and tell them your not going to be paying rent (if it is your lease you signed telling you that they need 24 hours to notify you) until they stop doing this. That will make them fuck off for a bit.

yup =)
also the official florida statute or whatever states a 'reasonable' period of notice is 12 hours before unless otherwise defined in the lease.

Exactly! FUCK THAT SHIT!! That is your home and you have a right to privacy in America! I would talk to them BEFORE it happens again. Tell them that you are not getting these notices and that they are violating your lease. Don't be beligerant about it, be polite, but assertive.
Also, is it the same guy that came in each time? either way I would notify the head honcho and let them know what is going on.

So upon reading my lease i found that they are required to give NO notice. They are only required to leave a note before they leave stating that they were inside.
That is some bullshit.
On the other hand, I have not been able to find anywhere that it is against the lease to change the locks.
If the lease does not state that I cannot change the locks, and I do, and they find out, what will happen?
I can keep changing them right? Do they have any legal way to stop me?
I am not 100% sure if its stated, i will have someone look over it for me, but from what I can tell it doesnt say anything about me not being able to rekey the locks. It only says that if requested, they will rekey my locks for a reasonable price. But never says I can not, or if I am going to, do it through them.
I just dont want to do it, and have them get pissed off.

If this was me,and I wasn,t growing anything, I would make sure and clean the place real good, and the call the police to come over and explain to them, that you,ll are freaked out,(the intruders might be perverts), and ask them to go talk to the manager for you, that will put the manager on notice that this is not right.

depending od state law it might not matter as much what the lease says as what state law says. If atate law says something different that might take precidence.

im pretty sure its against the law to change the lock, at least without providing them a key just in case of emergincies, like broken pipe fire, that kinda shit. but the next time you sign a lease you have the right to change anything you dont like and you can put it that you wan ta 24 hour notice. if they dont want to do it then just find a place that will. and also if they dont leave a note saying they were there then they are violating the contract and you can submit in writing that if they do it again you want to break the lease. but yeah if its in writing that they can enter your apartment at anytime then your shit out of luck. i think there is some crazy thing that if they find something that you were hiding and they had no reason to look there then you are safe but dont quote me on it.

If they don't include the 24 hour notice in the contract and refuse to provide it, they are breaking the law. The notice policy is mandatory.

You need to read your state tenancy laws...period. DOesn't matter what your lease says. All states have tenency laws that dictate what is and is not legal. All the info you are getting from here is and/or may be coming from people in different states. And for your info, federal law states that you have the right to defend yourself from unannounced visitors by all means neccessary, including rental property. The supreme court just ruled that the police have to give you 15 seconds to answer the door and that's with a warrant in hand. I say you be a man and confront these people and let them know what is going to happen next time they come into your house unannounced. YOu a re totally within your bounds to pull a gun on anyone in your own house and on your property so long as said gun is legal and you are licensed to carry said gun, INCLUDING RENTAL PROPERTY so long as you feel your being is at risk(enter legal loophole here!!!) GI Joe said it best...KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE!!! And acting is the other 1/2. Read the laws and learn for yourself in stead of relying on what people say. Cant believe I had to tell you all this. I need to stop replying to these things.
