In my little midwestern town, there is a problem coming across vermiculite. apparently most of the vermiculite is mined in some podunk mine in utah where recently, radioactive waste has been found and nobody will touch the mine with a ten foot pole.(on a side note, im curious how long the vermiculite has been exposed? have we all been eating radiactive shrooms?) anyway, back to the point, i have cakes ready to go and i dont have the time or money to get some shipped, anyone know of a suitable recipe for casing mix W/O verm that wont lack in yield??

Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit... is what those store clerks are trying to feed you.
Years ago, a Verm mine in Libby Montana was found to contain astestos. It was closed DOWN.
Verm on the USA market is SAFE to buy.

hmmm very interesting. There is no substitute for verm. They simply must put on their radioactive suits and go back to work!
Besides, if this is what radioactivity feels like, Imma nuke my yard

I was told it was taken off the market at the big commercial stores. Try a nursery. I have to drive all the way accross town to get it where I live. Ace Hardware told me some crap about it being poisonous.

the lowes in my area still sells it, not all have, soem sell it (including home depot) as a seed starter thats premixed with peat moss and calcium carbinate, it worked well as a premixed casing for me

IMO a lot of Dept. stores don,t carry verm because it is, bulky, not pricey enough, and is a seasonal product in the nursery trade.(meaning low profit margin.) i have never seen a nursery that didn't have or couldn't get it. these stupid rumors get started by ignorant sales people.

unfortunately they also make their way up to the exec level, I dont worry about it because I can have a semi full dumped in my yard for a couple hundred bucks, there's a company near me that distributes it and sells to repackagers as well as the insulation/concrete industries

exactly my point. it's cheap enough for use as packing material, and insulation, so stores (like target) can't afford to have it taking up valuable realestate on the shelves.

I don't have a prob at all gettin it. Those rumors have been around for a while now. Vermiculite has been taken off the shelf in the Wally Worlds that carried it because of the rumors. Now coir on the other hand has been a bitch to get because of the Sunami. Most coir products come from Sri Lanka. I just got good news today on my order though, so no bitchin here!
