I'm so nervous...I have to call job-places today!!
    #4346912 - 06/28/05 03:43 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Hmm...well I have a bit of a phone phobia.  I don't like talking to people over the phone because I feel blind, unable to read their body language or sense their connotation through words.

I have to get a job (like, seriously, enough fucking around) and so I got a bunch of job fliers from the grocery store to look through.  I'm going to call some people who are hiring.

I figure if I post this, some people will encourage me to do it because I really don't want to (but know I have to)...

Yeah I know. But there is something about calling strangers up on the phone and asking them about jobs that is very unnerving. Like...I'm placing myself at their mercy or something.

If it makes you feel any better, everyone's nervous about such things. I'm sure if you just grin and bare it, you'll do fine..

I just called Sears, who called me about two weeks ago (before I left to Ohio). And they've already filled their position. *sigh* But they said my resume will be on file for 60 days so maybe they'll have another hiring spree. At Sears I would have made decent money, although I would have had to figure out what to do about the drug test.

Okay, onto the next one...

Not a bad idea, and well worth the search, if you can find a post office that needs help. That would be a great job! All kindsa perks for Federal workers. I'd go ahead and put an application in anyway. Even if they're not hiring, you'll at least let them know you're interested, and they'll have your application on file....

Okay...um...I called and had to shell out $149 dollars for training material.

Apparently you read the material, then go take the test, and if you make a 90 or more on the test (and pass a drug test and background check) you got the job...

but damn, I wish my checking account didn't have to be involved.

Really? Hrm...I didn't know that was required. You might want to consider it later, when things get better for you, though. But keep a-looking! Even if you get a job that sucks, you can still look around for something better. Good luck with that! :sun:

On the ad it said $16.50 - $39.00 an hour

I ordered the materials, which should get here in 5-7 days. Now I have to remind myself not to smoke pot when its around. If I'm forking out over a hundred bucks even to TEST for a job, then I really want to make sure I get it. I'm pretty good at memorizing stuff, so maybe I'll be a postal worker soon guys...

PLEASE, PLEASE Don't got for a job that requires money upfront. That is just A)gay B)lame.
Also, don't take it so heavy. Just chill out, and remember not everyone is so uptight. People will be people whether you deal with them or not... Good luck with the job.

Well, as shitty as it might be to have to pay money upfront for training, I don't mind. My friend's ex-husband was a postal worker and he had to do the same thing. Now he makes lots of good money so I think it'll pay off.

I'm worried about scams on your behalf. I mean, if they won't hire you first and THEN let you take the training material out of the first paycheck, tell them to fuck off. Because once you pay the money it does not guarantee you the job(even if they say it does).
Whenever I started a new job and had to pay for uniform, materials, etc. They ALWAYS took it out of my first paycheck, or half the first, half the second.

Yeah we have that same thing down here for the postal workers. I think the company selling the materials isn't even related in any way to the post office. It sounded really shady to me so I never tried it but hell I hope it works out for you Ellemy. Im doing the same thing you are today but Im not calling anyone Im too lazy to even leave my computer so I am filling out a bunch of applications online. Im think im going to the temp agency tommorow because I need some work quick all I do is just sit around and drink all fucking day starting at like 9 in the morning. Anyone have any experiences with temp agencys good/bad?

yeah Quantum, I worked for a temp agency called Spherion, who hired me out to Dell Computer.  It was sweet (although boring) work, and I got paid very well.  The bad thing was that they continuously fucked up with stuff like paychecks, my next assignment, etc.  For instance, I got hired to a new assignment, worked two days, and then found out that they had "forgotten" to put me on the payroll!   And when I tried to call the agency to have them get me on the payroll, NOBODY would talk to me, I couldn't get through to anyone.  So I quit, in a bit of a rage.

My husband's experience is better.  He worked for Spherion and then through that work got hired to Dell, making excellant money for his level of education.  (not finished with college yet)

And yeah, flowstone, I hear what you're saying...to be honest, part of me wonders if it is a scam too.  But what's done is done, so now I just have to wait and see...
