Jars are showing no signs of colonization...
    #1428423 - 04/04/03 09:34 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Hey guys, AFOAF is doing some BRF jars and it has been 10 days after inoculation of the spores, puerto rican strain. He was wondering how much longer he should be expecting to wait, so I figured someone here could help with that. I was thinking that there might not be enough water in the jars, here is the recipe he used for it:

1/2 cup BRF
1/2 cup vermiculite
1/2 cup of water

could this be the wrong mixture? thanks.

Next time try:

1/2 cup verm
1/4 cup BRF
1/4 cup water

oddly enough, afoaf made the same mistake before. It was a couples days short of a month before the 2/8 that weren't contaminated reached 100%. If afoaf could go back, he would scrap them and redo them.

My vendor sent me two syringes in two seperate orders. I had only ordered one, but they sent two. The first has worked amazingly well. The second is showing no signs of growth at the 4 day mark in a rather warm environment.

Perhaps they fucked up and sent me a syringe full of water? and the second syringe was the real deal.

*shrugs

I wouldn't get hopeless yet. I just recently ran into a problem with colonizing, with the batch that is healthily colonizing. They didn't show any signs of it untill after i thought I killed them with heat, and then had the jars drop to under 60 degrees F. one of the jars finally showed a small little tiny weak patch of mycellium, after about 18 days. Tapalpa strain BTW

Even if they do take with the shortage of verm your cakes are gonna be low on moisture and not fruit very well. The verm is also what gives the substrate its shape or texture or you'd be putting wet brf clups in the jar that don't have the small gaps for air. (Why it's not packed into the jars even when mixed right.) Gonna be slow going waiting for it to finish colonizing if it starts.

They may still very likely start, it may take another 20 days, but all of a sudden they'll explode. Some jars take awhile to get rolling, especially if their environment is on the cool side. No harm in keeping them, you can make whole new jars for next-to-nothing, right?

I have had to wait over 30 days for my jars to even germinate... So.........
