questions about jars colonizing
    #4344016 - 06/27/05 06:34 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

this is my first attempt at growing, and the white goodness is filling up the jars well but its very cramped in the jars. The mycelium is having just barely squeezing between the cake and the glass? Is that a good, bad or indifferent thing? Would it be a bad idea to give it a little shake to move it around at all? I know that might slow the growth down some. The other question is should i maybe turn the jars upside down once they are like 2/3 done? does that help much? thank you thank you

did you pack the substrate in there? you should just drop it in and let it fall into place. You can turn your jars upside down when the myc starts to colonize the bottom to help with air circulation. If they start taking a long time to colonize the bottom, i usually give them a little tap to get the bottom of the cake off the glass.

no don't shake the jars. don't have to flip them as long as colonization is continuing. if you get water pooling in the bottom of the jar or if colonization stalls then you should flip them.
peace

i didnt make the jars, for my first attempt at this i went with the pre sterilized ones, and i figure if this goes well i can refill and reuse them next time. No pooling, the moisture seems decent just a little tightly packed. I wont disrupt anything just try and get it loose from the glass mabey flip the slow ones. thanks again

just out of curiosity, how much did you have to pay for those jars. and dont worry as backup already said if they are colonizing then you should be good.

I spent like 70$ for 6 jars pre sterilized, and came with a free 20 cc syringe. I realize i could have gotten a better deal but I hadn't found this site at that time, nor do i still own a PC. I know better now and if i have good luck i will get the PC and make my own prints and reuse these jars. I would like to be self sufficient next time around, and learn to make casings.

I didnt mean to sound like an ass. sounds like you bought from earths tounge I wouldnt go through the you should look in the vendors forum here next time much better deals like http://www.mycofactory.com/

The Rye-Z-Morph Bag(TM) contains just over 1 pound of pre-cooked and pre-sterilized rye grain that can be used for primary spawn generation with culture syringe injection through the self-healing injection site. $14.00 and would make a nice casing

i know  i know,  i spent alot of $    i wasnt smart before i came here   and im still not smart  but i got white fur in jars  so i dont have to be.  From this point forward im going to do things right and on the cheap.  Like I said  I haden't found this site (the shroomery)  previous to placeing my order at Earths tongue.  They take a long time but very good quality overall.    The vendors here are pretty good, though one of them  sent me only 1 syringe when i ordered 2    hopefully they will fix that soon.

There is no need to try and get the myc loose from the glass. Just let them be until they are 100% colonized on the outside and then give them a few more days of incubation. Then go ahead to birthing, casing or whatever it is you are going to do with them.
To bad you didn't find the shroomery before you went and spent all that cash but it is a learning experience and you will be better for it. Especially when it comes time to do them yourself.
Good luck.
Peace

IME, it works if you just give the slow ones a little upside down tap and sit them upside down... try it both ways and see what you like the best.

Its all good. Its only my first attempt and I am seeing good progress on all my jars. All of them are at least 50% colonized  with no signs of contamination after 7 days.  Ill probably be dunking at least 2 of them by next Sat.  I am excited about the birthing process     after they pin    it's all gravy.  In all seriousness  this hobby is worth throwing a couple bucks at.  It's good to learn, and it seems worth your while to spend the few extra bucks for good parts  water heaters,  tubs, pcs.  Seeing as most of the stuff you only buy once anyway.  All said and done  I will probaly have put less than $200 towards many many moons of cultivating and rich rewards you cant buy in stores   keeping in mind im doing about 18 jars a whack.  good times this summer  ya dig?
