Help! Time To Get F'ing Serious Bout Outdoor Pest Elimination
    #4343419 - 06/27/05 02:16 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys I need the help of all of our collective experience outdoors to help with this pest problem. From the start our outdoor grow (Amazon spawned to 40 kilos cow shit, cased with peat, verm, soil) our caps have suffered damage from slugs and possibly other pests. A couple days ago I see 4 or 5 nice pins, couple days later, all those mushies are gone, therse 1 mature mush with its cap virtually gone, and 2 small different pins. Today nothing. This is the last straw, time to get fuckin serious.
These are the protection measures that have been inplace so far:
-Insectigone (80% DE, 20% Ant Attractant) Lined around the outside of the patch, occasionally applied to casing layer. We got this cause the grow area is infested with billions of little red ants. We thought theyd be a threat, atleast to the grain at spawn time. I never see them eating mushies, but theyre always present, sometimes i see them carry off bugs which is nice, but I cant shake the notion that they're up to something nefarious. The Insectigone needs to be reapplied after every rain, our bottle just ran out. I plan on getting the slug+ant one next time(we hadnt seeen any slugs or snails at the site of the time of purchase)
-Beer bowls. They didnt hold too much beer, werent balanced properly, and were placed right at the sight. I put these down after i found 3 slugs at once eating caps and trippin the fuck out. After I served them I always see caps munched but none in sight, theyve learned if they dont book it before the mush kicks in theyre not in for a pleasant welcome at my arrival. The beer bowls dried up or were drank, 1 tipped over, and i found a huge beetle, ants, maybe a couple slugs. Gonna dig holes fo the next deeper bowls and put them like 5 ft from the patch..
Here's the damage we've suffered so far:
-Pins are eaten as soon as they start and never make it.
-Caps of mature specimens get munched on if not peace'd all together.
-Spawn (grains) are sitting on the top of the patch, as if dug up by a bird or squirrel
-Patch health hurting due to constant interference with foreign life.
-Yield suffering greatly, each mush loses a bit, ill bet half the pins dont even make it.

Here's what Im planning on doing and I need all the help you guys can give me:
-My partner and I already placed a tarp over the patch were gonna leave it there for a bit less than a week prob, hoping this will keep critters like squirrels n birds away, speed up colonization time.
-Get another thing of Insectigone, except for slugs, and apply more liberal doses all around the edge.
-Put the better beer bowls out there in better locations.
-Sprinkle shavings of soap all around the grow area (used in MJ growing to deter deer and other critters), im hoping it will stop whatevers comin to my patch and tearing it up (so frustrating to see no pins, but just random chunks of healthy rhizo myc sitting on the top, ripped up)
-Find a way to ring the patch with copper. Im thinking just get like $3 of pennies and ringing it that way. I need help knowing if id be better off goin to canadian tire and trying to buy some type of copper wiring, anyone care to help here? Getting this for slugs, supposedly copper zaps them, not to mention the rain wont wash it away.
Can anyone else help me out with:
-Ways to prevent pests from coming to the patch
-Ways to kill my psilocybin thieves?

Thanks a lot for any help you guys can give, please help.

For the larger creatures, I know that pissing around the grow site works, and also next time you go the barber gather up some of hair and sprinkle it all over the grow site. Always kept the squirrels and deer away from my growing sites. As for the bugs, would it be possible to have like mosquito netting propped up around the grow site? I don't know how good that would work, worth a try maybe.

put a copious salt rign around your patch. it will keep evil spirits out and dissolves slugs that crawl over it. you may wanna use rock salt so it doesn't wash away as quick. just pour a little salt on the ones in the ring and watch em bubble.

Hmm, would the salt's proximity to the patch ruin the substrate? Im fairly certain that salting the ground is to spot thingsfrom ever growing there lol.

Can sand be used? Got a big back of horticultural grade sand here, would it work as the same idea as DE or salt for slugs? (Cut em open, dry em up? I imagine any sort of coarse, small sharp fibrous material that sticks to their slime would hinder them.

i plant onions all around, and within my outdoor patches, and garlic plants at all 4 corners. this repels most insects. used coffee grounds seem to help too.
birds, mice, and squirrels will dig for grain. so bait traps with peanuts, and wbs.
if you think you might have a deer problem, leave a couple of empty beer cans. deer won't go near it, 'cause it smells like deer hunters  or get some cougar scent from the sporting goods store.
happy trails,
meanman.

Beer, in a shallow saucer.. Slugs like it even more than mycelium. Also sprinkle DE around the patch, and put the beer saucer near it. The DE will encourage them to stay outta the patch, and the beer will entice them to drown themselves.. I got a buncha slugs drowning in beer saucers in my backyard as we speak..

DE ran out yesterday. I made a salt ring, and put 2 beer containers out there with dirt up to the edges, as well as throwing soap shavings around. Well see how it goes.
