anyone hear about that anthrax mail sterilzation machiene made to kill anthrazx sporeas and bacteria of all mail.... i hope it dosent kill our sporeas i cant see why it wouldent.... this is gonna end alot of the online mushroom trade i think

I don't think the government will spend billions on a system that would run the post office bankrupt in the long run. The delivery business is huge, and the post office is already running behind ups and fed ex. If they slowed it down more, or made it more costly it'd be the end. The threat to the average joe civilian is minimal. A handful of people got anthrax so far. The gov. is just trying to look tough on this issue right now. But in reality, there's little that can be done about this until after it happens, then hind sight is 20/20. I highly doubt this anthrax in the mail will go on much longer. Terrorists aren't gonna keep using the same tactic, just like there's been no more plane hijackings/crashes into buildings since sept. 11. The gov. needs to find out what's comin next, and do something to prevent it. Granted it's a huge issue, but the cost to chance of it happening on a large scale are just to enormous.

it was discovered in 1998 and has killed many thousands of fish and thousands of pigs & cattle in the southeast along the missouri river around florida and up the coast. im not suggesting that i care in the slightest until it gets into NY but oh well. its been here, doesnt anyone read maxim? heh we all just look at the pictures....

Yes the government WILL spend the money neccesary for the machines. The post office will go bankrupt IF THEY DONT. They only need to set up about 10 central irradiating warehouses throughout the country,and redirect all mail through those facilities.This will add 1-3 days onto delivery time. THIS IS GOING TO BE A REALITY!................................bump

Why? People will not want contaminated letters (as they could be if they passed through infected depots) and so the postal service will be used less if safety of recipients cannot be guaranteed. You must have some understanding of public mentality... well I guess you don't otherwise you wouldn't have called that a moronic post. Just because some people don't give a shit, it only takes 5-10% of customers to boycott the service because they perceive their posting of a letter to a friend/relative as putting those people at risk and they're going to lose a shit load of money. Not fantastically clear thinking but then we're talking about the general public here. The odds for home mail contamination are there, no matter how small otherwise they wouldn't be issuing instructions on what to do if you think you have contaminated mail. That's enough for some people, believe me.

I must agree with this one.......
I do believe that the government will do this. They are not worried about the money right now. ANd the government will be the ones paying for this whole system. Not the USPS........... The government will spend $ upon $$$ to get everything as safe as possible. They will put this country in a deep deep dept hole. But that is what happens with war... WE overspend before and durring the war to do the best we can. And only once it is all over with do we worry about getting that money back... And dont get me wrong. I am not into the entire war thing but it is happening and we are it!!!!

Bumpercrop is exactly right. The U.S. postal service is a business like any other. People stop using it it will die. Where I live, many people have told the post office they no longer want home delivery. Businesses that used U.S. priority mail to ship their products are now switching(in large numbers) to UPS and FEDEX. Does that sound good for business? Bumpercrop is not the moron. You are.

and any terrorist could just as easily mail anthrax by UPS or FedEx. Trying to set up huge factories to sterilize all the mail going through the entire country is catering to all the things that are wrong with the American mentality to begin with. It's not about purpose or progress or reason, it's about image and prestige and all those other things that can only be meaningful to a half-witted ape descendant.

The gov. has been doing this for years. They use machines that use radiation. There's been a huge concern about it afew times in the media. Every single peice of food that you eat...chicken, meat, fish all that good stuff gets a health load of it, before it gets into your mouth. Except the crops that come from a farm field. In fact the EPA at one point wanted to stop the use of such machines, for fear that it could link to cancer.
Hope this clears afew thought up!

Today, the Postmaster general gave notice that letters and packages would be bombarded with UV radiation. This radiation would destroy any germs/bacteria on the OUTSIDE of the package or letter but would not be able to penetrate the letter itself or harm the contents of the letter/package. This measure is intended to protect the postal workers form infections.

Here in Portugal they're going to X-ray or scan every envelope, i really don't know how the hell they'll find any antrax or other spores this way. Maybe i got it all wrong but this idea is getting me crazy. What ? Spores in plumb protection or something ?

According to USPS.gov, the postal service will be spending the money to install and use irradiation devices. This means several things:
1. They haven't done it yet;
2. They haven't secured funding for it yet;
3. Money for the project must be approved by the gov;
4. Extra processing steps will interfere with the postal workflow, suggesting that not all mail pieces can or will be treated -- businesses will have a shit fit;
5. Pharmaceutical and bio lobbies will have a fit;
6. Private global couriers i.e. UPS, FedEx, and so on are not mandated to set up these devices.
Also, USPS is training its people to ID suspicious packages. So chances are, there will be screeners who catch certain parcels and treat them, rather than treating every single letter.
Let's be totally realistic here people. This is going to take a LONG time, considering the US gov has oversight on the USPS. Outside of war, nothing happens in the gov in a timely manner.
