Ronald Reagan
Former President Ronald Reagan was named the "Greatest American" of all time in an interactive contest tonight, topping fellow Republican Abraham Lincoln.
Of more than 2.4 million votes in the survey sponsored by America Online, Reagan, who died last year after a long bout with Alzheimer's disease, captured the title with 24 percent of ballots, just edging out Lincoln by 0.44 percent, according to host Matt Lauer.
"The memory is fresh," said Reagan's son, Ron Jr. "People remember the funeral. ... I'm sure he would be very honored to be in the company of all these great gentlemen."
The rest of the top five were civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. (19.7 percent), George Washington (17.7 percent) and Benjamin Franklin (14.9 percent).
"Ronald Reagan was a man of courage," said John Washington, ancestral nephew of George Washington. "These are all distinguished men, but Ronald Reagan, I think he deserves his place here at the top of this list."
The second half of the top 10, already established from voting in previous weeks, had President George W. Bush at No. 6, followed by Bill Clinton, Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfrey and Franklin Roosevelt.
The event was broadcast by the Discovery Channel, as ordinary citizens were able to cast votes by phone or the Internet. http://worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=45011

This thing was pretty fucking stupid.
Tom Cruise? Martha Stewart? Brett Favre? John Edwards? Rush Limbaugh? Mel Gibson? Dr. Phil???
There were a lot of people who were actually important who didn't make the list.
The lesson we learned here is that the kind of person who votes in these things is neither intelligent nor well read. If you believe that Rush Limbaugh or Dr. Phil are worthy of being on a list of the 100 greatest americans of all time, you have obviously not picked up a whole lot of information in your lifetime.

I think he was in the top 20 or something like that. They narrowed it down from a list of 100.
Reagan being elected Greatest American Ever is a sick joke.
Quote:
It is interesting to note that Jefferson chose for his epitaph the following: ?Here was buried Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of American Independence, of the statute of Virginia for religious freedom, and the father of the University of Virginia.? Notably absent is any mention of his service as president.
Some choice quotes:
What a stupendous, what an incomprehensible machine is man! Who can endure toil, famine, stripes, imprisonment & death itself in vindication of his own liberty, and the next moment . . . inflict on his fellow men a bondage, one hour of which is fraught with more misery than ages of that which he rose in rebellion to oppose.
A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt. If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake."
I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies . . . If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] . . . will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered . . . The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add "within the limits of the law" because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.
Why can't we have a president like that now? Such a great man.

Luckily, this is irrelevant and means nothing. It stills shows the sad mental capacity of people voting in online polls though.

Jefferson was a bit of a cunt. He talked greatly about the limits of government but once he was President he very nearly succeeded in turning it into a dictatorship. That and his love of things French hurts him badly in my estimation. For all the reverence given the Founding Fathers, these guys weren't saints. Lincoln on the other hand..... As far as Reagan, eh, he was marginally useful and his presence was ...timely. At least he got the feckless, peanut-encrusted turd Carter out of office.
