A piece of glass penetrated my foot
    #4342925 - 06/27/05 12:26 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

There I was, minding my own business, walking across the bedroom floor, when I felt something stab into the bottom on my foot and then I 'fel't a weird popping noise.  I look down, and there's this huge piece of glass embedded in my foot.

So I remove it and clean the wound, and realize that it goes at least 1/2 inch deep under the skin.  Will I be okay if I just let it heal naturally?  It doesn't really hurt (well, not really).

I think the glass is from a candle that I accidently broke.  I was half-asleep, stumbling the bathroom, and ran straight into the dresser which flung it off and broke it.

They should make furniture with round corners.  :mad2:  I'm so freaking clumsy.  I'm the only person I know who has injured themselves falling up a flight of stairs.  It's not an average day unless I trip over something or inadvertingly break something valuable at least twice in a 24 hour period. It is for this reason I am very paranoid in gift stores.  So...many...delicate objects...to potentially destroy!

I would put a disinfectant cream on it before I covered it up with a band-aid, and re-do the entire process with new cream and band-aids quite often, for the first couple of days. Your feet come into contact with a lot of dirt!

Can you bend all of your toes and move your foot normally?  If so, I'd say you're ok.  But if it won't stop bleeding, or you feel like you might need stitches for it to heal correctly, you could go to the ER or something.  For now, I'd wrap it up really tight, and keep it elevated as high as you can so that it stops bleeding.

And stop walking into things.

You just want to make sure you can move everything correctly, so that you know there's no tendon damage.

Yeah, it bled for awhile but now it's stopped and my foot feels fine. I'm pretty used to stepping on stuff I shouldn't (like a snake for example that bit me in revenge) but I wasn't sure if you had to get a shot of some kind just for glass.

Naw, you'd need a shot if it was metal. Glass is ok though. Make sure all the glass came out when you pulled the big piece out and there's none left in your foot. That would be bad.

No need for a shot... if it wasn't metal.

If you are SURE there is no glass in your foot... which should be easy to notice, you can probably let it heal on its own. But, if there is infection well below the skin, only antibiotics will help it, and you will need to see a doctor.

You'll know if you need medical help, well before your foot falls off.

The other time I stepped on glass there was some left inside...which gave me several agonizing hours of poking around inside the wound with tweezers. I cried like a baby too.

please don't spread misinformation...metal has nothing to do with it just happens its a good way to cut yourself

FACT: Tetanus is caused by a toxin produced by a type of bacteria found worldwide in soil, dust and manure.

I think you'll be alright. Just use antibiotic cream as suggested. Aloe works wonders too!

Another fact, if you have not had a tetAnus shot within the last five years, and you get cut from old, oxidized metal... you should get a tetAnus shot ASAP.
