Depressing music

Is it the music? Or you? Can music be inherently depressing or does it just push certain people's buttons? Or, which is what I'm thinking, it just pushes buttons at certain times. Sometimes just listening to some mellow ambient grooves bums me out, but I'm not sure why. And now I'm listening to "The Polyphonic Spree" and the first song kind of bummed me out and prompted me to write this.
Another popular favorite "depressing" band (So I hear..I've never heard them, but for examples sake), Tool.

most music seems to effect people the same way, although sometimes it varies a little, but not much. they are doin some study (forget who) about how music patterns effect peoples brain waves, and they say most people so far have almost had identical results... (not sure if they actually said identical, maybe just very similar... hehe).

That study sounds pretty interesting. Music is a pretty unique thing. The power of sound can affect people very heavily.

i think it's all about interpretation. i used to be really into the smiths and did they ever get me down. i turned a friend into a smiths fan and he went through his phase- we'd hang out, drink, and he's play the smiths. we spent more time focusing on the rocking quality of some of the music than the darkness of some of the lyrics. i realized there was this new way to enjoy the smiths and got more out of them the second time round.

yea, but with taht youre also lookin at the lyrics, where as words can have many many meanings for different people, where as those scientist dude where only lookin at sound (instrumental). once you add lyrics, thats when it moves into the grey area
ps fred, yea man, i agree! it really does hav a heavy effect

Yeah I rarely if ever listen to lyrics. Even if I wanted to know what they were saying, I can't make out 99.9% of lyrics anyway. Only bands I can deal with are the ones that have a good singer who SOUNDS good, because I don't give a fuck what he's saying.

i think there's more to understanging music's effect on the brain than what brain wave is generated. ex. if a certain song reminds me of a lost love i will feel sad. or some people find death metal energizing vs others find it noisy.

Yeah. That "dark" sound is pretty much what I'm talking about.

yeah im not so sure what the facination is about. when i was young i thought the drak sound was "cool" Although i prefer the darkness of floyd over tool...they both rank high in my book. (refer to my post in the i do not like the dead post in the pub)
its just natural to explore the dark side of the mind i guess.

Dark sounding music isn't allways depressing, I find it "purifying", all those hours spend with Neurosis.. Try some Noise/neo classical/power electronics/ death industrial/ Dark ambient if you think NIN is "dark".
-------------------- when you're watching television the higher brain regions (like the midbrain and the neo-cortex) are shut down, and most activity shifts to the lower brain regions (like the limbic system). The right hemisphere is twice as active as the left, a neurological anomaly. The crossover from left to right releases a surge of the body?s natural opiates: endorphins, which include beta-endorphins and enkephalins. Endorphins are structurally identical to opium and its derivatives (morphine, codeine, heroin, etc.).After just 30 seconds of watching television the brain begins to produce alpha waves, which indicates torpid (almost comatose) rates of activity.

The Doors can be pretty dark. Check out their second album "Strange Days". It sounds like some kind of peverse carnival music.
But yes, try playing that shit on a cloudy day and it will depress you to no end.

I agree, depression lies in the eye of the beholder. If music reminds you of how bad things once were, you could just do well to remind yourself of times past instead of reliving them.

Yeah, music that is attached to a certain moment defenitely has a specific emotion attached to it.
But I'm willing to bet there is something about music that can affect someone without prior involvement with that music, in a specific way.
