I listened to some samples of them on Amazon. It sounds very spacy and theme-like in a Pink Floyd kind of way. Does anybody have any input on them? A first album I should check out?

Listen to their first full length... the name escapes me right now but it's one of the best albums I've ever heard.
I think it's De-Loused in the Comatorium
and when you first get it, listen to it all the way through, meaning start on track one and just let it go.

The singer was in ATDI and another band called Sparta. The Mars Volta is EXCELLENT music for those more, um, introspective times. Very symphonic and beautiful. I also have a soft spot for At The Drive-In although its more punk rock than symphonic rock.

I just downloaded some of thier music for the first time after hearing it on an alternative rock station on internet radio.. I must say they are very talented...they remind me of a lot of bands put into one... I could say that Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd are definately an influence on this band...for sure!...they rock!!..

I saw their late night show this year at Bonnaroo, and was blown away! They freakin' rocked the place. The drummer was awesome, the guitarist ripped, and the lead singer...Wow! I've never heard their albums, but live they made my night.

I like MV. Both CD's.
I saw them with APC last year....
don't like them live. Couldn't understand shit. Just repetitive noise, and usually I like that.
APC though, I could understand everything, so it wasn't the sound or the place.

Nope, wrong.
Mars Volta's singer and guitarist were the two guys with Afros from At the Drive-In. ATDI broke up because when they started getting a bit of success, the band started becoming all about the "two white guys with afros" instead of the band, so the other 3 guys quit.
Two of the other three (maybe all three, don't remember) left and started Sparts, lead by Jim Ward, the former guitarist of ATDI. Sparta is an amazing band, btw.

;-) Big ATDI and Sparta fan hehe so hehe, thought I'd let you know.
I don't like Mars Volta, from the few songs I've heard. Those two guys aren't too talented, in my opinion. They just are trying to be all artsy and eclectic, but it just comes off as two guys not playing their instruments very well. If you want good avant garde music, try Mr.Bungle, etc.

Eh we argued this pretty extensively in the post which Desiree put a lin k to. I personally detest them for a lot of reasons, but I went through that and frankly dont feel like arguing it again.
