Some High Altitude Early Mushrooms
    #4337637 - 06/25/05 10:11 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

These were found at about 11,000 feet altitude in the central Colorado Rockies this last week. Both of them are actually fairly common species of mushrooms here.

This first one is a Jelly Fungus with the name Guepiniopsis alpinus. For scale, the biggest cups in the photo are about 3 or 4 mm across.

These others were found within a few feet of a melting snowbank. They are Lyophyllum montanum.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks for the high altitude photos. I have read that only several hundred metres can mean a month or so of the season to mushroom growth. Neither species appear in my Japanese guidebooks, but Mt. Fuji is not that hospitable to mushrooms. (Which is about where 11000 feet would take you.)

When does the bolete season start there?

It may not be obvious, but the bloom (the white stuff on the big cap) is a key difference between L. decastes and L. montanum. And, of course the habitat, although I have found L. decastes at similar altitude in mid August. The other difference is that I always find L. decastes growing from (or very near) wood, and L. montanum grows from the ground.

I expect to start finding boletes in 2 to 3 weeks, starting at lower altitudes (say, 7000 or 8000 feet).

Happy mushrooming!

Does the bloom on L. montanum rub off?

On wood chips or beside them is where I find L. decastes.

Yes, the bloom rubs off easily.

Incidentally, A lot of the Boletus edulis I find also has a bloom.

I'd like to see a picture of Boletus edulis with a bloom.
