A few questions on preparing the casing layer
    #4340095 - 06/26/05 08:58 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

i don't own a pc and so far it has not hindered my grow. i have 23 jars 2-3/4 colonized, non of which are contaminated.

since i don't have a pc, i'm trying to determine the best way to sterilize the casing material. i bought 12 quart jars last night, just for the hell of it i guess, but i was considering putting the peat/verm mix into them and boiling each jar for 90-120 minutes.
- with a 1/2 base layer on the tray, then the broken up cakes, and then another 1/2inch layer on top, i'd have a lot to spare and could probably just open the sterilized jars with the peat/verm and dump as much out as i need, seal it back up and wait till the next cake is done and ready to be cased.

i'd get the water content right before i sterilized it, draining it out and whatnot. this should work out fine, wouldn't you say?

another question i have - i cannot find oyster shell flour, i called all around and the only place that carries something similar is agway which have oyster chips. i supopse it's the same thing, i could just grind them? but i'll just get lime i suppose, even that though i'm having trouble finding.

but the question - would i include the lime in the peat/verm jars before i sterilize? would i sterilize the lime with the peat/verm? i was going to put the bottom layer below the mycelium with peat/verm too, so i'm asssuming this would work fine.

what do you think?

You can nuke it, but I usually don't do anything to my casing, I haven't had a contam, but I've only cased 6 times..

I have good luck with nuking my casings and my LCs too for that matter just get a big tupperware I use peat/verm 20mins on medium setting I have had contaims but not before the third flush and I think it was from not PH balancing my casing mix since it was trich and trich loves acidic soils I hear oh ya if you nuke mix in a little extra water it evaporates in the mic and if it is too dry after just add some preboiled water

that sounds fair, i'll just microwave it then. i'll be able to do a bit more at a time then, and add water as the process goes if it gets too dry.

what about the lime? could someone tell me if i should add this in when nuking the peat & verm.

no, you don't have to pasturize or sterilize. for mine i have sterilized by boiling for about an hour. one casing out of 6 has got just a touch of the green, so far, hopefully i don't see anymore. i put just a little salt of the green and it has gone away, maybe for good maybe it just went underground, time will tell. another possibility for a ph buffer would be calcisand, you can find it a good pet stores in with the reptile supplies.
good luck
peace

Oyster Shells? I check a pet store, oyster shells are used for birds (somehow). Its pretty powdery. Otherwise you just just crush it in the bag it comes with.

Only as a last resort
will a wise person use a deadly weapon.
If peace is her true objective
how can she rejoice in the victory of war?
Those who rejoice in victory
delight in the slaughter of humanity.
Those who resort to violence
will never bring peace to the world...
