Sound Card Output
    #4339050 - 06/26/05 11:46 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Can I use a splitter on my sound card output to hook up two sets of computer speakers to use simultaneously?

Sweet, thanks. And there's no loss of power or signal to either set?

well, just as with any audio output on any device, there is a limited amount of power it can output.
Soundcards, though, generally dont output any wattage for speakers, and thats why about all computer speakers are self-powered in some way.  so if you split the output to two powered speakers, you should have no problem at all.

Or you could just install 2 sound cards

Yes, there will indeed be a loss of signal strength, but I doubt it will be significant. Like cortez says, sound card output is meant to go to a speaker system with its own amplification, and that's what you're going to do, so it'll work.

You might create an impedence mismatch... this might not matter or it could be bad. You will need to check the documentation for whatever drives the speakers (sound card or amplifier) and see what impedence range it will operate over. If your speakers impedence doesn't match the range that amplifier is designed for, then you will eventually blow the amplifier.

> And there's no loss of power or signal to either set?

The total power delivered is the same, but the power going to either set is halved... kind of. This is where the impedence issue comes in... depending on how you wired the speakers, parallel or serial, the impedence will have either gone up or down. With the voltage staying the same, the current needed will go up (or down) based on the impedence... and if the current goes up too high, you buy a new soundcard (or amplifier or speakers).
