cant get pinheads to form...please advise
    #362096 - 07/27/01 04:43 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

i am trying to initiate pinning in a chunk of colonized rice cake. what parameters are required? is there such a thing as too much humidity? i have it in a coke bottle terrarium, and all of the inner surface of the coke bottle is covered with water droplets, though not touching the actual cake. i do air exchanges twice a day. it sits in indirect sunlight at least 6 hours a day. the entire chunk is colonized, but im not sure how deep the mycelium runs. is there a certain penetration depth required for pin formation? in that case, im not sure what to do. can anyone help me with this? it would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Try dropping the temperature a few degrees...

that droplets may be a sign of excessive humidity... lower humidity if it gets cottony and bumpy...

Sometimes when mine are being a pain in the ass, I huck 'em in the fridge for 12hrs. then stick em back in the terrarium.... I guess you coul put the whole works in the fridge. Don't air it out as much till you get some pins, the higher CO2 is good for now... air every 3 days.

Normal Temp should be around 80-85 degrees .... remeber it can take stubborn cakes a week or more.

good luck.

Probably think about building yourself a real terrarium, you can do it easily with a styrofoam cooler or something like that. With what you have you should probably stick them in the fridge for 10 hours, definetly keep fanning them alot, more than 2 times a day as long as your humidity builds up quickly enough. I know I always use this excerpt from tmc but stamets recommends:

Relative humidity: 95-100%
Substrate temperature: 74-48f
Duration: 6-10 Days
C02: Less than 5000 ppm
Fresh Air Exchanges: 1-3 PER HOUR

Air exchange will help them pin.

Use your pinning triggers all at once. Lower CO2 levels through daily fanning, drop temps from 82-84F. down to 74-77F., give them plenty of light 12-16hrs. and get that RH up! 95-100%. This also applies to cakes as well except cakes can go directly into your fruiting chamber as soon as they are fully colonized THROUGHOUT! Getting the most out of your casings!, A pinning strategy.

I can get pinning at 82-84 but not that good compared to room temp.

Okay.. here is another thing you could try after nothing else works. Turn your cake into a casing. It's lucky.

you need to learn somemore cause there is mistakes in your technique. co2 isnt good and the temp he is shooting for is 74-76F. not trying to be a prick or anything but be sure you have read up and fully understand something before you go spreading false information.

It takes forever to initiate pinning above 80 degrees.. And cakes DO love to be wet.

Funny how no one asks about how long you've been in the fruiter. It usually takes 7 to 10 days for pins to start up. If you haven't waited at least 7, chill. Get yourself a nice bottle of JD and wait it out or something.

i will not birth cakes until they pin invitro. its just easier that way. But i also use an ultrasonic so they will pin either way. Cakes love to be wet, dripping in water. Drops on top. Remember, cubes dont require casing to fruit but it helps. casing for a cube just ads moiture. In cases where it is required it is becasue the mycel needs the different inviroment to fruit. Now cakes without casing still need high humiditiy, so soak them, get them wet. They love it.

Also to add to tahoe's comment casings when optional produce more pins thus increasing yields.
