first timer problems
    #4336635 - 06/25/05 04:45 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

i went with the standard pf cake method using the PF strain. I birthed my first cakes about a month ago it pinned like normal and roughly twelve little mushrooms came up but they stopped growing after they got about 1\2 inch long and the thickness of a toothpick. after about three days of no growth i picked them and the second flush did the same thing. I ground my own organic BRF, used natural spring water, and put them in a 10 gal aquarium with 2in. perlite 1/4in. water. I fanned every 24 hours. I've been searching this website for hours and have not seen any postings of similar problems. If anybody can shed some light on ths for me it will be GREATLY appreciated.

you got it billy. you need to give more fresh air exchanges. once every 24 hours probably just isn't enough. it is recommended to have 2-3 exchanges per hour. CO2 build up possibly will cause your problem.
ok now the perlite is best soaked in water and then put in the terrarium, standing water is just an invitation to contams. plus the perlite will give a higher rh on its own compared to it sitting in water. more surface area for the water to evap from.
where is your temp at? how much light are you providing?
peace

temp between 80 and 88. the terranium is by a window so it gets indirect natural sunlight.

How can you keep the humidity above 90% giving air exchanges every two to three hours. and how could you ever leave your house.

thanks kronny. you should drop your temp to 72-75, you will have better luck in that range.
it is recommended to have 2-3 exchanges per hour, not every 2 or 3 hours. automation my friend. i use a fish aquarium air pump in an airbox to achieve this. hoses from pump into tub into a 24oz. pop bottle partially filled with water. fresh air and some humidity at the same time. this may not be the most effective way, but it is working for me. i also have 4 holes in the tub stuffed with polyfil that allows for some exchange as well, i have seen others with more holes, but again this seems to be working for me.
good luck
peace
