Surgery after first flush?
    #4331542 - 06/24/05 07:48 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Hi, if it seems that a not-so-good pinset is due to an overly thick casing layer (1"-1.25" on a 3" substrate), would it make any sense to cut off the top 1/2 inch or so after the first flush as to be less work for the mycelium to make pins? If so, before or after dunking?

I'm thinking the casing layer might have more evenly distributed mycelium below the surface. Also, over misting during pre-pinning may be an issue, as well as applying the casing layer when the horse manure substrate was not quite 100% colonized.

I know this is a little out there, but I'm trying to be creative.

You could remove the casing layer if you wanted. Whether that would help your second flush is another thing.
So you would take the casing out.. and then slice off the top with a sharp knife... or what?

I realize it is an option, but I lack the experience to decide if it will be beneficial for future pinsets. And yes, just cut off a half inch of the casing material with a knife.

Hmmm... I have not done anything like that.
But.
I would say if you want to try.. Remove the whole casing layer.. Dunk the casing... and recase with a thin new layer. Then it should be as flat as possible.. the casing would have plenty of water to form new pins... and that is what I would try if I was going to do something like that.

Other opinions?...

NO. let it do it's thing. initiate pinning (sounds like you have already) just as the myc start to come up through the top layer of the casing. Check your conditions.
