taking a 40min drive to pick up calcium carbonate on saturday
    #4330241 - 06/23/05 10:33 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

i was looking to get that and oyster shells, the nearest farming store is 40+ min east of me.  i can always get peat and verm at lowes, so no worries with that.

would you say i should apply both the calcium carbonate and oyster to my casings, or will one suffice?  i've known oyster shells as being more of a long term buffer, but i'm not sure if i'll find pure calcium carbonate so i'm substituting in that case i suppose.

the reason i didn't want to use horticultural lime is because i've read that it can burn your casings, or that it disrupts the mycelium, so the best way to go would be just pure calcium carbonate.  also, from the bags i've viewed so far at local nurseries and lowes, i haven't found lime with a magnesium level below 3%, which i've heard is required for a healthy grow.

so, i'm going to look into getting both the calcium c, and the oyster shells.  is there anything else that's less conventional, something i couldn't just pick up at lowes, that i'm forgetting in order to prepare my casings?  i can't think of anything really, maybe a good hygrometer but is that even necessary?  i should be able to tell the humidity just by condensation build up.  i also have a cheap thermometer with a humidity gage on it, i'm sure its off though - not calibrated.

yes yes.  questions...
thx in advance  :sun:

that sucks, a local nursery should have it. Dont ask for calcium carbonate

when you go to a store and ask for water do you say 2 parts hydrogen and 1 part oxygen?

hmm, i looked around, i couldn't find it. i'll check back again before i make the drive. would that suffice, alone, as a continuous ph buffer?

Crushed oyster shells are calcium carbonate. Most crushed oyster shell products, especially from a feed-store, are at least 94% calcium carbonate.

oh, i thought it was found mainly in lime. hmm, well i'll just check at lowes again then. maybe i missed it. that would be fine then to regulate the ph?

Just a thought...
Petsmart sells a cuttle fish that is supposed to be a calcium supplement. It's really chalky and easy to crush, but I don't know if it would suffice for this purpose or not. I'm sure someone else here knows.

Here's what you want:

I paid $12.99 for this bag. First thing I would do is call the feed-store and see if they carry the brand pictured. Let them know that you need large chunk oyster shells. They are used in feed for chickens, so they should be readily available.

Verify the price and weight of the bag. If you can get your hands on this size bag, you're golden for at least a year or two.

Calcium carbonate is used as a long term PH buffer, while hydrated lime is used for an immediate buffer. I personally use both.

No sweat on the information. I doubt Lowe's will have what you need in any significant quantity, but good luck.

chicken farm?

far too much nitrogen in chicken poo if you're thinking of going that route, it
burns plants if it's not allowed to age for a while

Let me please take a second to elaborate on what Tahoe originally said...

Anytime you walk into a "garden" supply store; be ready to explain yourself...

For example... you walk into an X-mart... and ask for vermiculite...
Be prepared to answer some questions...

Luckily for me I read a lot here at the shroomery and was prepared...

They WILL ask you why do you need this?

Look at them like they are an idiot and say this... Vermiculate adds moisture and allows for air exchange in my garden...

In the few times I have dealt with this... It has worked wonders...

As far as dont ask for "X"... well dont ask unless you can come up with a REASON you need it.

Peace and love to all
KimiKiri
