quick casing question
    #4329337 - 06/23/05 04:53 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

i'm familiar with pf cakes, and i've recently started my first set of wbs caked, they are coming along great and are almost completely colonized. i was thinking about trying a 50/50 peat. verm. casing but i cant seem to find anything that says you have to sterolize the bottom layer of verm.
the question is: do you have to sterolize the bottom layer of verm the standard (p/c) way or will a heavy misting of peroxide and water do?

side question: is it recommendable to put a dry layer between the myc and bottom layer

the bottom layer should be pasteurized at least. you can do it in a microwave.
a dry layer is not recommended anywhere in a casing.

Hooray for uselessness! Lets sterilize something that comes dry and can't be contaminated, woot! :dumblol:

Actually, I mix my verm with peat, and have read many teks on this site that indicated I should sterilize it. "Hooray for usefulness" is sarcastic, unnecessary, and I would encourage you to say nothing at all if you have nothing decent to say. I actually did what many of the experts recommended....rather than bother all you folks with excessive, uneducated questions, I read for weeks and weeks. For that I get criticized anyway...amazing.

Don't be unconstructive just for the sake of doing it please.

Vermiculite CAN harbor cobweb mold, I've seen it.  Sterilizing verm is not a bad idea, it's just not common practice.

You sterilize in the microwave. 5-10 minutes in microwave safe container, w/ lid cracked for steam to vent out.

I do it for 8-10 minutes in high with a stop and stir halfway through. Don't forget to add the necessary H2O. Enjoy.
