I need tips to help quit smoking
    #4328664 - 06/23/05 01:11 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

It's really pissing me off i was supposed to have been done smoking by my birthday april 17th.. every time i get my mom to agree to buy me nicorette she doesnt then when i ask for more ciggarettes she gos "I THOUGHT YOU WERE QUITTING!" and i just feel like slapping her for saying it when she knows she said she was gunna get me nicorette. but anyways its a pain in the ass i dont really like the flavor it makes me want to puke i hate it, its stupid, and worst of all my body "needs" the nicotine or else i get all shakey and weak and stuff. i know i dont have the psychological need for them because i dont want to smoke and it makes me sick only thing that reminds me is when my body freaks out cuz it doesnt have nicotine. so i was wondering if any one can give me some tips or advice or anything that can help me quit smoking. :cig:

I've never quit successfully but I know people who have, and as far as the nicorette goes apparently its best to go as long as possible without it after you quit smoking, until the nicotine cravings are unbearable.  Then you chew everytime you feel the need.  But don't chew the gum like you would smoke cigarettes, one after the other, every hour or every couple of hours, however often you light up a smoke.

Also if the gum makes you want to puke, try the patch or one of those nicotine inhalers.

Other than that the only other tips i could give you are the ones I've found here on the internet ( drink lots of water, exercise ).

Good Luck

"so i was wondering if any one can give me some tips or advice or anything that can help me quit smoking."

I'm sorry if this is to obvious of an answer, but to quit smoking, stop it! Do not smoke. to not be smoking.. there is no other way..
unless you do not quit, you can not quit..

a tips. If you think you have stopped smoking, if you only have stopped buying smoke.. well.. you will still be smoking, just having no smoke..

and then, one could go for weeks, not having smoke, thinking one has quit, and when the offers a smoke, one can not say no, as one still smoke, but quit buying it for weeks, and really got a need for it..

there is but one way to quit smoking.. It is to quit smoking!

i agree with gomp, there's no easy answer. Accept the fact that you will never stop fiending for cigs, but know that the longer you go without them, the more you will have at stake to not do it again. Every time you crave a smoke and dont give in, it's like punching a cig company big-wig in the nuts. Just look at it that way. If you are young, there is evidence that your lungs can fully recover from the damage that has been done by cig smoke. Take up skateboarding or martial arts, bike riding, something that clashes with smoking and strengthens your body.

You really dont get a better method that Alan Carrs. I read the book and quite easily, on the spot, wihout any desire to smoke ever again! I seriously suggest you take buying his book into consideration. If your out of cash, i could possibly send you a copy for free, thats how convinced i am by his method. PM me if your interested.

http://www.allencarrseasyway.com/

"The object of this book is to get you into the frame of mind in which, instead of the normal method of stopping whereby you start off with the feeling that you are climbing Mount Everest and spend the next few weeks craving a cigarette and envying other smokers, you start right away with a feeling of elation, as if you had been cured of a terrible disease."

Comment buy a reader left on amazon:

"Simply unbelievable. I vowed to stop smoking before my 30th birthday (later this year) and after a few failed attempts using willpower, decided to see if the hype about Mr. Carr's books was true. I had heard that by the time you reach the end of the book, you just stop smoking, as if by magic. I was convinced that I would be the one sucker who read the book and just carried on puffing away - to be honest I almost hoped I would, such was my inability to imagine my life without fags. As it was, I was on a beach holiday at the time - usually a prime smoking time for me - finished the book halfway through the hol and - yes, haven't smoked since. I've had no withdrawal symptoms, don't miss it at all - in fact hardly think about it at all. I am so incredibly happy and relieved at having stopped. I am loving each and every thing about being a non-smoker. It's difficult to explain exactly how he does it but I think that what worked for me was the fact that he basically de-mystifies smoking, dealing with each and every argument, issue or angle, without being a nag or having a holier-than-thou approach. On the contrary I really appreciated the fact that he'd been a heavy smoker himself - and knew all the little habits and quirks that you develop as a smoker to keep justifying why you keep smoking. I think that the trick is to really think about what you're reading and re-read it if necessary until it makes sense. What has been especially fab is the fact that I haven't found myself worrying once about starting up again. I simply can't imagine myself smoking again - not even that odd sneaky one at a best-friend's wedding. I always thought that I wouldn't be the same old me without my ciggies, but now I've realised that I am exactly the same - only healthier. And I am loving it! If you really want to stop smoking then I'd say that this is the only way to go. "

I started slowly weaning myself off cigarettes a little over a year ago. At that time, I was a 1/2 to 3/4 of a pack a day smoker. Today I allow myself to smoke one cigarette every few days, a very non-specific schedule- usually I save it for after a good, long cannabis-smoking session, during a shroom trip or some other special occassion. I used what is called "the cessation technique" among addiction specialists: this is simply a gradual enlongation of time between cigarettes. There are literally thousands of potential triggers for a heavy smoker to have a cigarette. Most of these are small, passing thoughts triggered by a wide range senory perceptions- anything from a gesture or words to objects or sounds/smells. I have found that by consciously ignoring these minor triggers, it soon becomes possible to eliminate all but the primary or ritual cigarettes. The hardest for me to get rid of was the infamous after-meal cigarette; a meal would always feel incomplete without that capper. The hardest cigarettes to not smoke are these "mandatory" cigarettes. You must convince yourself of the fact that there is no such thing as a mandatory cigarette, and as you wean off, NEVER smoke at these conditioned intervals. It doesn't matter if you get stuck at 5 smokes a day, as I did, as long as they are not smoked at ritual event-times. Also begin to avoid the intermeadiate, more informal ritual times, such as before/after class/work and while waiting for something/someone. Get used to the idea of not lighting up at the same time as others- cigarette smoking as a social event is your arch-nemisis. A final thought- don't tell yourself you are quitting completely; if your anything like me, you really don't have to quit, just slow it down to a reasonable level that won't have any dramatic negative effect on your physical and mental health and you will find that the mental fixation will all but disappear completely, leaving only an occasional passing thought which is easily ignored. If you can master these thoughts, congradulations- you are no longer Big Tobacco's helpless pawn and now have an invaluable experience of self-affirmation that no one who "just said no" can claim. If people tell you you're playing with fire by still having an occasional smoke, tell them return to the safety of their televisions and to let you know when they finally manage to come up with an original thought. please excuse my rambling, but I know you can see it through without any need to depend on capitalists with patches and gum. Peace and good luck!

Maybe form some negative association with cigarettes. Someone once told me that they dipped their cigarettes in milk and let them dry. Whenever they smoked, they'd throw up.

Once, psychologists conducted an experiment in which they electrified cigarette packs in the attempt to stop smokers by attempting to associate a painful electric shock with cigarettes. It so turned out that the smokers became deathly afraid of cigarette packs, not cigarettes. Hah!

cultivate other, less toxic "habits" ...
try other stimulants and/or nootropics...
chewing on cinnamon sticks (or calamus sticks, ewww...)
getting a couple/few hundred grams of coca leaf & "doin' the chaw"...

good luck... (no daily ciggies for me since like december last... but it may be time for another chaw...)
