Need help choosing a credit card
    #4327570 - 06/23/05 06:16 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Hi folks,

Believe it or not I've never owned a credit card. I've made all my purchases either in cash or with my debit card!

So, I believe now is the time to choose a credit card. What I usually spend money on is, in order of increasing frequency:

1. Dining (daily)
2. Buying groceries/stationery
4. Buying gas (biweekly)
3. Paying bills (internet, gas/electric, monthly)
5. Purchasing electronics and other entertainment/necessities (every few months, in bursts, most of the time online)
6. Clothing (yearly)

Because I can't really choose, I'm thinking of getting a Southwest or a United or some sort of program which allows me to accumulate miles, since I plan on travelling. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm really rather clueless when it comes to credit cards.

Thanks in advance.

it depends on how much you make a year, your age, and the terms. Scope out which company can give you the lowest annual percentage rate.  A lot of them will try to get you to sign up by giving you 0% interest  for one year, and then jack up the APR to 18% or 21%. Far too often, it's a hard lesson because the first year you can just have the money on the card and not be charged extra, and then when that year is up, that rate goes really high and you are being charged extra because you have a fair sum on the card.  Just an experience I had

21% is not cool, I had to go through that rate before.

you mentioned that you want rewards. Also be careful of companies that will give you "frequent flyer miles" as there are stipulations attached.

All I've ever owned is Visa's and I'm somewhat glad now, because I paid my debt and I'm able to talk them down to a lower APR.

good luck with credit and don't spend what you don't have, ever  :sun:

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

my $0.02. The "reward cards" are nice, in that you seem to be getting something for spending money. However reward cards usually have very high interest rates. So, if you plan on carrying a balance, go with something other than a reward card (I'm not sure if you are a student but they can get special deals sometimes).

Also, read the fine print on your reward card. Usually, you have to spend so damn much it really doesn't matter. For instance, on my "reward" card, for every $3,000 I spend, I get a $25 home depot gift certificate. Awesome huh? On my last Visa "air miles" card I figured out I needed to spend something like $10,000 to get a one way ticket anywhere in the U.S. Even on 1% cash back cards, you don't start getting 1% back until after $3,000 (up till then it's tiered and you get like 0.5% for the first thousand dollars or so).

Basically put, the rewards aren't really worth interest IF you plan on carrying a balance. Since I pay my card in full each month I figure I'm getting a miniscule shot at a "reward" for money I'd spend anyway. Good luck.

I like my southwest card...

it had a competitive introductory interest rate (for 1 year)
and earns points towards southwest vouchers.

I travel lots for work, so I just put all my business expenses
on there and bill back to the mother ship.

it's nice, becaue I get double when I buy southwest tix with
my southwest card.

In fact, I just sold 3.5 round trip vouchers on southwest for
about 1100$ a few weeks back cuz they were about to expire
and I wanted the money.

I'd strongly recommend a Visa Debit card, that way you can only spend the money you have and you never wind up going into debt. I know for a fact that I'm way too immature to handle a credit card so I use a Visa Debit Card and it just makes my life way too easy.

However, if you're talking about a credit card credit card (and I meant to write it like that) I'd strongly recommend the American Express card. I haven't heard of a single person who's had a problem with the company or who hasn't enjoyed using it. My parents have been with American Express for as long as I can remember and they're always raving about how decent the company is.

I dunno, just my two cents... which you can use to pay off your future debt

Everyone gets the same warning and everyone falls into the trap anyway. Credit cards are horrible. It is far too easy for someone young to get into debt and nearly impossible to get out once you are buried in it. My wife and I spent nearly 10 years trying to recover from a couple bad years of credit use. And it seemed so harmless at the time. A tiny bit here, a tiny bit there, and the next thing we knew we were fucked!

We now maintain one credit card just because you need it sometimes for things like car rentals, etc. And we haven't used it in a long time. If we do use it then we pay it off immediately in full when the next bill comes. I also have a Visa Debit card tied to my checking account. I can only spend what money I have, no credit is applied. I use that for all purchases where I need a credit card (mail order, internet orders, etc). I refuse to owe money to a credit card company ever again!

I built up my credit using a secured card I got through the credit union at my work.

IMO, secured cards are the way to go if you're just starting out.

Debit cards are convenient, but I don't believe they are considered "revolving-credit". A secured card is, and being secured, it's kind of a safety net so you don't overspend.

I just use my card for groceries and what not, and I make sure to pay it ALL off every month so I don't have to deal with interest.

I've had a bunch of credit cards, they aren't horrible, just be smart about how much you charge and don't carry a balance if you can avoid it. These are the best ones in my opinion:

Amex Blue Cash

Chase Ultimate Cash Award Mastercard

Both offer up to 5% cash back, no annual fee, and a pretty low APR. You should be aware though, if you've never had a credit card or a loan or anything like that, you'll probably need to get a secured card to build some credit before you'll be approved for one of the cards with good benefits.

Hope this helps,

-Y

I'll second the Amex Blue Cash. Thats the one credit card I maintain (besides my Visa Debit Card).

And if you are no good with your money a debit card can be trouble also. I have a friend who is a compulsive gambler. He had to cut up his debit card so he could not get access to his money through ATM machines. Otherwise he'd blow everything he had every time we went to the bar! He'd have a few drinks and he'd sit down in front of the video poker machine and then it was all over.
