instead of pasturizing....
    #4327507 - 06/23/05 04:20 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Could I just simply use a H202 water mix in the 50/50 casing mix?

I haven't sterilized, or pasteurized my last 4 casings.. I think if you're putting them on a fully colonized sub, the sub can stave off most contams..

I agree with you on that Kalix. Contaminates are more likely to follow after you have already had a few flushes. By the way Dalorean, you sterilize casing mix, not pasteurize it. Just FYI.

you do not have to sterilize casing mixes

also FOR ALL NEWBIES USING PF-Tek

Vermiculite comes sterilized in the bag, sooo when you need to dunk & roll (which will double yield for every flush) you can just wash your hands, use hand sanitizer after that, then spray lysol on your hands after that, and finally... rinse your hands thoroughly with alcohol, THENN you can reach in your bag of vermiculite with 99.9% sterility (according to the lysol label) also spray the shit out of the air with Lysol Neutra-Air, $.50 less than Oust, and it sprays "better"

It gives you an extra amount of water which DOES help increase water mass....

I've seen cakes that weren't dunked/rolled and yielded about as much as they would if they were cased.

Just some FYI...

You know that it's been known to cause mutes right?

If you read the lysol label, it says for Surface Satanization...Oust is a finer mist and is Just for air sanitazaion...:rotfl:

Where do you get your information from?

Aren't you the one who said they were experimenting with pasturizing and sterilyzing poo to see which yields better....:nonono:

I think ima have to drop you a Pm...

Everyone is crazy with sanitation. I just make sure my countertop is clean, and I turn the burners on on my stove to create a convection current (this is good - people light bunsen burners in labs when they need to keep things sterile). I make sure my hands are clean, rub them with a little isopropyl alcohol, and thats it. No big deal.

I haven't tried not sterilizing casing mix, because sterilizing it in the microwave is pretty easy. The biggest pain in the ass is waiting for it to cool, in my opinion.

Grow, you mention that vermiculite is sterilized so you don't have to worry about it. Which may or may not be true, but that's only half the 50/50 mix. I know for a fact that peat moss is not sterilized... so regardless you will have to sterilize the mix, might as well be safe and sterilize the vermiculite too.

If it has worked for you, congrats. But its risky business and I wouldn't advise people to only use vermiculite as a casing layer and assume its sterilized.

I so trust most big brand name companies to have sterilyzed products.

But For my own satisifaction I like to nuke in the microwave.

I use peat/coir/verm....That's 3 bags/brands I'd have to trust...

Nvm...Point is. Better safe than sorry.

I buy vermiculite and peat moss pretty regularly and can tell you that the bags are not sealed. In fact, the bags all have pin holes to allow air and gas buildup to expel. That's far from being sterile in my opinion.

note I was talking to PF-Tek users. that's why I mentioned ONLY the dunk & roll procedures... ok I didn't mention it but that's what I had in mind

I buy my vermiculite in 6 cubic feet brown bags, no holes, no tears... Sterile right out of the bag..

I haven't personally used peat moss thats not sterile.
I have seen people who have with success each time.

Gnostic, neutra-air is just like oust. It's sold next to it, that's how I know

It's not Lysol. Lysol is a brand, they make an air nuetralizer called Nuetra-air

reading from the label, "Helps reduce inanimate airborne contaminants."

epinions: Read here for NEUTRA-AIR by Lysol
