Self
    #4327396 - 06/23/05 03:27 AM (11 years, 5 months ago)

"The notion of a self is a construct of the physical brain with the purpose of preventing rapid change in the mind."

Whaddya guys n' gals think?
I think its right on the ball. Everything is made of matter that is constantly changing, humans are no exception. The concept of 'self' is a holdover from Aristotlian essence.

yes to provide continuity
moments are blended together creating an image of a solid self (the smear of consciousness)
and
constructs are created to reinforce the solidity and to defend against threats and change.

Its a load of horseshit IMO. Id like to see where scientists have isolated the part of the brain where this "self" exists.

The quote says, that this "self" prevents us from changing? Also, to me, its a load of horseshit becuase this idea of an individual self that we create (which of one of the greatest deceptions) is also constantly changing. Today you think your a good person, tomorow you may think of your "self" as the opposite. This idea of self that we have clung to, is constatantly changing (like all other apparent phenomena), and if we examine our thoughts, feelings, emotions, physical sensations, we can actually discover directly that there really is no essence, no indiviudal "self" of which to find, anywhere. In short, there is no self, and we have been decieving ourselves all along. When you discover this, you may also discover the meaning of what people call the "cosmic joke".

Sinbad, talk nicely to whomever you speak, become their equal and share with your buddha nature. (that is the message to you from the lotus sutra which you have published here if they are a King Brahma .... if they are a child... if they are a dragon...)

the originator of this thread started out on your side.

I'm not insulted, in any way.
But...
I don't think the 'self' exists either! The was the point of my post. That quote is saying that the 'self' is really just a mental construction, something our brain fools us into believing.

Cosmic joke? Hell... look at my sig.

Cool. If you replace the word, brain, for mind we would totally be on the same page with this one.

All relativity, I suppose. Everyone needs something to ground them, to reflect on the outside world. If there's one thing you know, it's yourself.

On the other hand, just because the self is an ever-changing form, doesn't mean it can't exist. It isn't just what you are, it's what you were, how you got to where you are, and where you intend on heading. Notions of the self, like emotions, can be explained away in a scientific manner, but I doubt that will ever remove the importance from such basic parts of the human psyche.
