Hrmmm tub heat generation?
    #4326443 - 06/22/05 08:17 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Alright... I stuck it out last night and spawned 3 tubs with about 4" substrate each.  I've got them bagged and everything (to keep light out and such)... but I wonder about the heat generation.  Where I live it is somewhat cold, and my apartment is around a constant 68F... So I'm not sure if it's going to be sufficient or if I need to go buy a cheap heater.

I used worm castings, verm, and straw as the substrate... but today (about 12 hours later) I cracked the door and put my hand on the tub to see if it's going nicely, and it was just all cold and stuff... Should I worry or does it take longer for it to start generating heat?

Thanks for the help!

Someone much wiser than myself once gave me this advice, and nothing more at the time...

Build an incubator!

How big are they. I know they're 4" deep, but what are the dimensions of the container ?

Ah, they are 75 quart bins, a little too big for an incubator.. sadly :frown: I think a small heater may be in order here...

Around what temp do I want the room?  I was thinking of getting one of those oil filled radiators, a little more safe and I'd have the comfort of knowing my place won't burn down :p

By the way nice dark side logo

75 quart to big...? First of all you will only fill around 1/6 of the bin with water and a 15 gallon aquarium heater(one of the smallest) would be more than enough to do the job.

A controlled environment is the way to go

won't generate much heat, if any on its own the way manure does.
those oil filled radiant heaters are nice. 'cause thy don't dry up the air like a space heater /w fan would .
you could even put a can of water on top of it to help humidity
