World Wind
    #4325711 - 06/22/05 06:33 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Here is a great free program released by NASA. It gives a 3d image of Earth that can zoom down to 1000ft above the surface at any point on the planet. It uses sattelite photos for textures. I can even see my house with this thing. http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/

How come no one else has replied yet? Let alone taken a look at this thread??

I'm downloading it right now, looks promising as hell.

Terraserver. No local software required other than a browser:

I downloaded World Wind...don't know whats up with it though if I zoom in anywhere it's all blurry or white, doesn't show any clear images like Terraserver.

Another cool program to play with is Celestia with all its add-ons.

Terraserver lacks in many big ways...Microshit made it so I should not be surprised. If you have not, try World Wind...it is in true 3D and covers the globe. It is way more useful.

Celestia rocks. Combine celestia and world wind you would have a killer app.

Change satellite views and you can get high resolution images. Also it downloads adittional maps as you zoom so it takes a minute. You also must have a good 3D card.

Biggest lack of Terraserver in my opinion is that it only covers USA.

Wow, man. This is an awesome program! I'm having a lot of fun.

Only downside is that I don't really care about my computer system, it's prebuilt and has a generic onboard video card. lol. Talk about bottem of the barrel bullshit.

I can view my house, but when I get within a few thousand feet of earth my computer gets really choppy, then my video drivers overload and explode. No one knows how I feel. *emo tear*

Go to pricewatch and get a cheap card with 128 mb of ram. I got a geforce 5200 for $38.00 for my fatherinlaw's computer.

I don't know why terraserver only does the US... the data that the terraserver uses covers the entire planet... I know this for fact because I used to work with the systems that record the data directly from the landsat satalites.  When I was involved with it, we created a complete picture of the planet every 16 days.  Clouds were removed by subtraction across mutiple 16-day periods or by selection of days when clouds were not present for the public data set.

There is a huge amount of data available in the data streams from the satalites that are not available in terraserver.  We could tell how much water was in the soil, what types of vegetation (or at least how thick the vegetation was), etc, from these other data bands... I think there were around 30 different data bands if I remember correctly.  What you see with terraserver is created from only one or two of them.  A single 'image' from the satalite took aproximately 3g of space to store before we processed the data.

That's one big ass picture lol.

Wish I had access to that. Lots of information to be had.
