problems with pins (see-through pins)
    #4324430 - 06/22/05 01:00 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, so this is the oddest thing ive ever seen. I dont have a camera so i cant take any pics, ill try to get someone's to use so you guys can see this.

About 3 weeks ago i innoced 7 1/2pint jars (2:1:1 mix of rye flour/verm/water) with a KS LC. Half of them colonized completely in under a week, they are now fruiting and there is nothing wrong with them. I dunked/rolled/birthed 3, dunked/cased 4.

There is one cake (the last one to pin) that has pins all over it, but the caps of the pins are clear. No joke, you can seriously see directly through them... Humidity is constantly between 97 and 99%. There is air exchange 3 times a day. Temp is always inbetween 74 and 77. There are a total of 7 cakes aside from this one in my terrarium, and this is the only one doing that. There is no sign of contams on the cake, it is all fluffy white. (more fluffy than any other cake actually). What is causing this? How can i fix it?

i sounds like rhizomorphs and you wouldn't want to "fix" anything except possibly humidity. quick few follow up questions...
1) Is the cake kinda spikey
2) Is the cake brilliantly white

P.S. Pics really help

Maybe the wetness is doing it..I've seen rings of caps be almost transparent looking when really wet..fully rhizos also make me think that..see if they darken up, they probably will...try and put the lid off just slightly to get the humidity more like 95%..not much different I know but if you can eaily cock the lid slightly on the corner.

they look EXACTLY like a regular KS pin, not spikey at all. But they are pinning in larger groups than normal. The cake is brilliantly white. I use perlite humidification, i usually keep the cake on the perlite until the pins initiate, it seems to give me a better pinset on my cakes, the myc is starting to seem to colonize the perlite though. Could it be too wet like you were asking scatman? Ill try putting the cake on a lid and see what the pins do.

I would agree with the wetness. I had something similar when I had humidity at 100% and was spraying. I actually got a blow dryer and 'fanned' the crap out of them. Just be sure you are not using any heat. The blow dryer worked quite well for air exchange

thanx to everyone for the help... Ill post what happens after i move the cake to a lid, and im gonna fan out with a handheld fan for a little extra time to try to bring the rH down. My hygrometer maxes out at 99% and has +-3% accuracy, so the rH could be too high. i just dont understand why the other cakes arent having any problems.
