Bonsai's come in several styles most of which i don't remember off the top of my head so i won't bother listing them. But basically a bonsai style is based on pot dimensions, tree dimensions including the trunk ratio to foliage ratio etc.
Your bonsai is already set in it's style so bending it down and all that is kinda out of the question. When you bend bonsai branches you bend them when they're young and tender not once they're hardened and lignified. You're pretty much set in managing your bonsai by trimming new growth, removing dead growth, fertilizing, and mossing it when it flowers.

Bonsai is a method of growing not really a cultivar of plant/tree. You can take a cutting of any tree and turn it into a bonsai. There are several sources of bonsai including seedling grown, cutting grown and wild harvest saplings.

Thanks for that link, Psilopleix.
What species is your tree, Ohm?
I didn't want to get a "finished" bonsai tree, neither did I want to grow one from a seed, so I got myself a Northern white Cedar plant (Thuja occidentalis), which, how I gather, is not too demanding, hence easy for beginners. Besides I've always liked this evergreen species.
One of the plants in this picture is now mine
I read that Thuja is not the best subject for bonsai as it can be quite hard to work with and has a difficult foliage, but hey - I gotta start with something. Hopefully this is going to be a good training as my first bonsai, besides I've seen pictures of some quite nice results:
I just hope it survived my noobish handling and transplanting to the temporary growing pot Alright, back to reading about bonsai now
