trich question
    #4309173 - 06/17/05 09:12 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

I bought a peruvianus and a 3-branched san ped yesterday, however they were pretty neglected and you can see how etoliated they are. So I decided to chop them up and will re-plant each segment come spring. My question is: will I eventually be able to grow decent sized pups from these skinny cuttings (provided I take good care of them), or will they be doomed to be scrawny like their parents?

They just look dehydrated, I've seen ones a lot thinner. They can prdouce good pups definatly once rooted. Those blueish cuttings look really nice.

Thanks faslimy, the bluish ones are the peruvianus, it wasn't as thin as the san peds but it still snapped as I was moving it. Damm their spines are vicious...

I've always planted mine vertically, but since there's quite a few of them i'll try planting some horizontally, thanks for the suggestion. What differences have people noticed planting horizontally to vertically?

Well for a start you will have root initiation from more places! Thats good, you need a big and healthy root system to support you plants. Also since Apical meristem is hone and you plant them horizontaly you may see more pupping ,and more room for pups to develop.Try a simulation in your mind on how they could grow and you will see why!

AFAIK horizontal cuttings will throw out more pups but they'll take MUCH longer to root and pup.

When i bought my pedro it consisted of a horizontal cutting with four branches growing out of the cutting.

Since you have so many cuttings you could try both ways and post back your results

You shouldn't bury it more than one inch into the soil. Rot.

Some roots will indeed come directly out of the core but they'll find their way into the earth.

Should I worry too much about red rot spots that have appeared on couple of the cuttings? I've since moved them from a cupboard in my room to the hot water cylinder cupboard where it's much warmer and drier.
