Colonize jars upside down?
    #4321171 - 06/21/05 04:56 PM (12 years, 10 days ago)

I'm a noob, so I apologize if I missed this somewhere but . . .

I was thinking when I colonize my jars I would store them upside down. Since CO2 sinks and tends to stall the mycelium, I would think that would result is marginally better colonization. Plus it might be slightly less apt to introduce contaminants. I suppoose elevating them slightly to allow for some air circulation underneath might be in order. I would naturally fruit them with the same orientation. Thoughts? My plan is to use a tub in tub with a 50 watt heater for temperature and cleanliness.

CO2 doesn't stall mycelium. CO2 at the colonization stage is beneficial.

I thought I had read that sometimes the jars will fail to colonize near the bottom due to a build up of CO2 . . .

To get you up to speed, we use the flip method when the jars DO stall. as for it working, it does but it hasn't shown me any sign of improvement. your right on the money though when you said to elavate them for air circulation, otherwise you would just be moveing the co2 around in the jar without exhausting it. personally, i've never heard of them not growing at the bottom because of co2. maybe a heater got to hot and stopped them from growing but not from co2. anyone else???
