First attempt at casing
    #4321017 - 06/21/05 04:21 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

This is my first attempt at casing , using the 50/50+ Tek. It will be two days old later tonight.

I just followed the tek instructions , and Im not sure if this is what I am supposed to have. Does my substrate look corrent? The little white chunks are crushed oyster shell. My main concern is the mycelium growth , there are spots similar to the ones in the pic all over it. Thanks for any help.

ok, lightly patch the areas that you can see, then give it a couple more days of incubation and then fruit it. doing this is supposed to give you a more even pinset, ime so far it works. some do and some don't patch so i guess it becomes preference from experience.
good luck
peace

All you do is to lightly sprinkly some casing material over those spots of mycel. Let it stay in the fruiting chamber and you will soon have pins....
Good Luck!

ya what they said, but it looks like your casing is a little dry after you patch mist good and stick it in the fruiting chamber cause the mycel will grow a few days after you intinate pinning!!!!!GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the help , I have some substrate in the microwave right now.

About the moisture content , the tech really didnt elaborate on how wet the subtrate was supposed to be. It just said to squeeze out the excess water , which I did. When I press on the surface of the substrate a small ammount of water comes out , is this the correct moisture content or should it be wetter?

Thanks again

Yes , two half pint cakes. It provided enough to cover the bottom with slices and crumbled chunks inbetween.

It's roughly 13x9.5x2.75 (LxWxH) , largest square roasting pan I could find at KashNKarry.

Nein problem

I patched the patches of mycelium I could see and gave the whole thing an misting. It's sitting in my incubation room which stays in the mid 80's covered up , I didnt want to put it in the fruiting chamber yet since the ambient temps in there are around 78 and I heard the best temps for vegetative growth are in the mid 80's.

                                                                                  Thanks for all the help

Thanks for the link , it was very informative. I took a peek at it earlier and there is small patches of mycelium coming up all over the place , today is day 3. Should I go ahead and place it in my fruiting chamber? I dont think there is quite an 10 degree temperature difference between my fruiting chamber and incubation room , its really hot down here in FL. My incubation room is around 85 , and the ambient temp in the fruting chamber is around 78-79. Will this be sufficeint or should I use some method of cold shock?

                                                                                    Thanks

you have an A/C? I would put it in your FC and stick that sucka right in front of the A/C, Oh and to really speed things up you can lift the lid and scream out "EH, YOU PINS, I WANT YOU TO GROW GOD DAMM IT!!!" that helps, it's called word shock. If that don't work you can threaten the myc just put it right around the fridge so it can see where it's going if it don't shape up and fruit.

Then again, I am new, what do I know???

I do have an AC , but it's an window unit and not all that great. I was thinking maybe I could place a few trays of ice cubes in the pod with it to cool things down?
