it's been a good 15 years since i had rambutan...and i remember loving it when i was a kid!

i stumbled across some rambutan at the asian market yesterday...great price too...5 euros a kilo! that's technically a very good deal!

here are some photos of rambutan if some of you don't know what it is...if you can find it...go ahead and try it out

WTF is this? It's blowing my mind!!!

Is it a fruit? How do you eat it? Do you cook it? Does it taste good? Will it make you trip?

So many questions...so much to know

So little time... Quip pro quo... or something

its a fruit. I think it grows on a tree. You can get it canned also, because usually they are pretty expensive. Basically you squeeze it and the peel should pop open. Then you just peel it off. Its very tasty and sweet, and you just eat it straight. There is a rather large black oval seed in the middle.

as daussaulit said...it is a fruit

rambut = "hairy" in malay i think...so it's often described as hairy nutsack fruit.

it grows in clusters in trees...tropical reigions such as south east asia. first time i tried rambutan was in the philippines

all you have to do is peel off the skin and eat the flesh...

That must be the coolest looking edible thing ever. What does it taste like (I don't think I've tasted lychees either)?

Sort of like a large grape, in my experience.

exactly.

like a large muscat grape.

That picture brings back a lot of memories Boo. A rare find in my neck of the woods, and expensive if you can find them. I prefer rambutans over lychee, I like their texture more, and they don't have that scaly seed covering.

Anyone ever tried Carica? a Chilean boutique fruit. Very yummy.
