Heating pad questions

I have my jars all inoculated, and they are in a tub and i put the whole thing over a heating pad in the dark to try and bring it to 85 degrees or so. But i read somewhere in these boards that that technique could dry out the substrate on the bottom? Is there any way to make this technique work better? How necessary is the extra heat, is it just to speed up the process which in turn will prevent some contamination? Can they grow at 75 degrees OK?

try obtaining a thermostatically controlled space heater... works so much better than a heating pad lol.... mine cost me $15 at a flea market but u might not have such good luck.. seriously tho.. evenly heats everything and shuts off when it reaches the temp u set it at and turns back on when it drops below the temp u set it at

You don't want jars in direct contact with a heating pad. That - will in fact dry them out. You need a grate, or something like a grate seperating them.

You can put a buffer between the pad, like a blanket or old clothes. I used a dimmer switch and an electric blanket. I now am back to my aquarium heater.

make a incubator with a submersible aquarium heater and two rubbermaid containers.
they are much safer than using a heating pad.

like, the one i got heats exactly to the temperature u set it at, turns off when it reaches that temperature and turns back on when it drops below that temp. this is called a thermostatic control like i said before... and as far as being to large it takes up about 1/3 of the tub its in which leaves plenty of space for my needs

I have used a space heater when I ran out of fuel oil for my furnace in the winter.
the space heater saved my grows.

So I will use one in emergency situations.

I concur with Roadkill regarding using two Rubbermaids with water and an aquarium heater in between. I found it to work much better and provide a more consistent temperature.

I started with a heating pad.. thought it would be easier and a nice shortcut I could take.
But then I realized it wasn't. My heat pad costs just as much as a decent fish tank heater, around $15. With the heating pad I had to constantly run back and forth making sure it didn't over heat, the tank heater is set and forget. Get two large tubs at walmart for under $10, you can use them over and over again.
If you don't want to use a TiT, you can put the tank heater in a glass jar and fill it with water, then put that in a box with you jars. I never personally used that tek but have seen other do it with success, and its better then the pad. Ditch the pad dude, its more trouble then its worth.

Doesn't the water in between the tubs get funky and mildewy after even a week?

It won't heat up too much if thermostatically controlled, but they are far more expensive to run than a baine marie (tit) or heat pad set-up, You are heating a full room. One in a small wardrobe is a bit more efficient. It would suit a big grower, hippie chick had photos of one. Also you have a use for it other than shrooms. Thats what I like about an electric blanket, plus a double size is huge and cheap. you do really need a thermostat for it. I have a dimmer but it needs to be adjusted every few days due to ambient changes

this is what i do. I put 3 layers of towels under my incubator and set it on the lowest setting. The room temp is usually 75 degrees F and the heating pad set up like like this usually keeps the temp between 82 and 86 without drying any of my jars.

The water between the terrariums does indeed get nasty, but it's no big deal as you don't really need to touch it much. It doesn't get too visibly dirty, though a slime sort of coats everything. I'm lazy as shit and live in a tiny ass apt., so clean it out once in a long while.
I recommend against putting an aquarium heater in a glass jar. Not only does it generate humidity and not heat as efficiently, but the aquarium heater I used didn't seem to like such a setup - I almost electrocuted myself one day because the heater was all cracked and filled with water, presumably from the high temperature in the jar (which was necessary if I wanted to provide enough heat for the whole incubation chamber).
The two tub setup is really the way to go. I had the same fluctuating heat problem with the heatpad.
I've learned as I've come along in this process that it is better to spend money on doing things the right way than saving a few dollars, causing yoruself anxiety and headaches, and eventually needing to spend the money on a better setup anyway.
Just my twenty million dollars.

Hey all,
What if I took a huge 110 litre tote box, basically like a "rubbermaid", and put in it a large container of water with a decent aquarium heater submerged therein, connected to a digital thermostat, and then put my quart spawn jars next to it lying on their sides, and close it back up with the lid, making sure it is well sealed? I'll also probably add some bleach to the water for good measure.
Thanks!

You replied to an 8 year old thread to ask if you could just make a TiT.
The answer is yes. The TiT would be a better idea.

I was hoping to get Roadkill's attention on the matter.
Anyways, thanks, the TiT looks like what I want to do, but instead of having two tubs into each other, I thought of placing a huge container of water on the one side, with a 150W aquarium heater submerged therein, and then the jars next to it, so the warm water would heat up the atmosphere within the tub, eventually.
But It looks like the TiT-tek is more sound and established.
