well today was my first seattle mushie hunt...
sadly not too much was found ...
I wandered around some mulch piles, and various neighborhoods checkin out the lawns... and then went to the Washington Aborterum.....
could some one help me distinguish the difference between alder bark and cedar?
I collected jus for fun.. but sadly i dont have a digi camera yet or I would have posted my findings....
It sure gets discouraging not finding any thing but i guess its the thrill of the hunt.. I wanted the mushies just to jump out and grab me and scream "hear I am pick me" haha ... oh well ....
is park hunting productive? or shoud i jus wonder?
Productivity was reached though ... I was able to get out and explore Seattle some more, found a discarded blanket (excellent condition) and a huge amanita muscaria (the cap at least 5 inches in diameter)...
....so i m goin to dry out the amianita and check out its hidden treasures
n e one help with some advice for my next hunt???
thanx

Well, the cedar mulch is reddish in tone. Stay away from the red stuff, you'll be wasting valuable time! hehe.
Stay cool and find us some mushrooms, man!-Levi7.

Alder bark is found everywhere. I think it's alittle more pricy than some of the others, though. So, I'd probably steer more towards office buildings or upper-class neighborhoods. Yeah, it's a greyish-whitish color.
Stay cool and good luck today!-Levi7.

Eyyi, alder mulch/chips can be a real bastard to locate and identify. As levi said stay away from anything redish, as you will be wasting your time. Look for either chips of a grayish/whitish coloration. Some nice soils enriched with hardwoods (alder, maple...) are also another nice place to look for psilos, that wont have a red tint to it all and will look very dark brownish when wet and the pieces of hardwood visible will be a lighter brownish color or even lighter if not completly wet. Take a look at my pics of the stunzii, that is the "magically mushroomy psilocybe producing shizniat diznirt" at least that what i like to call it. That stuff is beauty tho and whereever that stuff is spread fungus is sure to follow. If you want to see a surefire alder chips habititate go to seattle university and look deeper back in the bushes, the school remulched last year with a bunch of coniferious shit (red and ruins the cyans) but there are still some beds there with only alder and they didnt get to the backs of some of the nice beds so alder still exists and so does the cyans. Hope that info helps you more that confuses you......god knows i just confused myself.

We just had our entire yard mulched, but of course the cheap bastard who did it went with cedar. Would playgrounds at elementary schools be a good place to look? They always have bark on them, and it is the lighter colored stuff.
