Integrated casing, possible TEK?
    #4317854 - 06/20/05 06:55 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Have you guys ever tried integrating a casing into your substrate in addition to a normal casing layer? For instance, what if you made a 60/40 verm/coir mix and then mixed about 20% this, in with 80% colonized substrate and then cased as normal? This way while the normal upper casing layer was being colonized, the integral casing layer would also be colonized. This way you would be adding MUCH MUCH more moisture to the mix, providing plenty of fresh water to produce masive multiple flushes.

There are alot of substrate formulas which utilize this sort of theory (pf tek etc.) but I have never seen one which applied it to the science of whole grains. It seems to me it has the potential to dramatically increase yields. Hmm new experiment to tell my friend about maybe...?

I've personally never tried it, but I know that some people do mix some vermiculite in when they spawn.

This would cause you to be able to rise the substrate depth with the casing which is a good thing. A 2inch substrate depth would go up to 2.4 if you added 20% of verm or verm/coir, therefore likely giving you bigger mushrooms, but there are the same amount of nutes in the substrate layer. so as far as total yeild goes you would theoretically get the same amount of psilocybin from the 2 inch pure grain substrate layer as you would with a 5:1 grain:(verm/coir mix). With the pure grain substrate you may get one more flush than the mixed substrate. But each flush would likely have slightly smaller fruits than the mixed substrate's flushes.

It would add depth maybe but you'd still have the same amount of nutrients (casing layers have no nutes). Seems like it would even out to me.

you need be careful when integrating so as to not be prejudiced against any of the less prolific shroomies

What i'm thinking though is that mushrooms are 90% water weight, and as such more water in the mix leads to bigger fruits. It's true that it wouldn't really enhance potency (necessarily, although this could be an unforseen benefit) but might increase yield. Not all people are looking for more psilocybin per unit of space, more mass means more product. I think I might tell my friend to try this out on the next casing he does, has anyone tried this?

92% :smirk:

It'd help water content. If you have your water content on the DOT and have a casing layer. Then all that - Unnecessary.

I include coco coir and verm in my substrate, great texture for growing on..

So you guys just mix it into your substrate when casing, or you cook it in the jars with verm? And what substrates are you using, I was thinking this method might help alot for grains.

I add verm to my grains, 10-20%...it wont help adding coir or peat to the jars, it will hurt...shreaded straw SUCKED ASS...made it impossible to shake or break up once colonized, the network was to strong.

My substrate is poo...i add coir to the poo while soaking in the water so it absorbs it and mix it in...the pour off the water and add verm to soak up the rest..the use that as substrate...if its to wet, I sterilize jars of coco coir that was expanded and dried out and jars of dry verm..then mix 50/50 coir/verm when I spawn to the poo...

Ahhh I see. I'll have to try adding the verm when casing then, as just some extra moisture.
