What to do about terrorism
    #431712 - 10/20/01 06:59 PM (22 years, 5 months ago)

This editorial was obviously written before September 11, 2001. It's still a good one, though.

This one appeared as a full page ad in the New York Times Oct 2, 2001, before the bombing of Afghanistan began:

Your son's comments... [Re: dimitri211]

Your son's comments make more sense than those of the brainwashed "New Left" clique that dominates this forum.

What a load of right-wing drivel

I took a look at the institute that the Author is head of, got their own philosophy going, based on selfishness...http://www.peikoff.com/opar/excerpt.htm

...doesnt suprise me after reading that.

There is still time to make the world understand that we will take up arms, anywhere and on principle, to secure an American's right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness on earth.

The idea that an American life is worth more than any other is one I fail to understand.

Wow! This, from the second essay, is one of the most completely insane assertions ever uttered:

"Fifty years ago, Truman and Eisenhower surrendered the West's property rights in oil, although that oil rightfully belonged to those in the West whose science, technology, and capital made its discovery and use possible. The first country to nationalize Western oil, in 1951, was Iran. The rest, observing our frightened silence, hurried to grab their piece of the newly available loot." -Leonard Peikoff

According to this fool "we" own "their oil" because "we" discovered it and are able to use it. Damn, that's nuts... Stop reading this crap. If you actually think these essays are any good you got seriously ripped off at school!

Why don't you read a bit of history yourself? Those oilfields were the property of private companies (not all of them American, by the way) who had been sold the licenses to the mineral rights legally by the governments of those countries, just as the logging rights to large portions of America are the property of foreign-based companies (Japanese, for example). They were in those countries at the invitation of those governments. They didn't displace any villagers or destroy any existing structures. They did all the exploration, they did all the drilling, they did all the pumping, they built the pipelines. They paid taxes to those governments on every drop that was pumped from the ground.

The governments of those desert countries (with no agricultural or manufacturing base to speak of) were initially delighted to get that revenue... they had no other "cash crop" with which to provide basic amenities to their people... just far more oil than they could ever use. The ruling regimes amassed wealth that was (and is) stupefying to contemplate for no more effort than pushing paper around, at no detriment to their citizens. They invested some of that money in infrastructure and projects that improved the standard of living of their citizens substantially.

What was the reward given to the oil companies? Their property was SEIZED. The contracts were violated. That's what "nationalization" means, you know. Those companies had their property stolen from them, pure and simple. Those companies, through their productive actions, had increased the wealth of those countries tremendously, through a peaceful, legal, contracted process that benefited both the host countries and the shareholders of those companies. No violence was used, until the nationalization, of course. If it hadn't been for those oil companies, the national economies of those countries would still be based on picking dates and making goat cheese.

Before you start calling an assertion "insane", do some basic research first. This nationalization is not an arbitrary statement that the author pulled out of thin air... it is an objective, verifiable, historic fact. It caused quite a stir at the time it took place. The newspapers were full of it, books were written about it, there were endless debates in Congress and the Senate about what the proper response should be.

Just because it happened before you were born doesn't mean it didn't happen.

I imagine some of the non-leftists (few as they are) who write here are tired of being insulted, too.

I would make a comment on "ostration", but a thorough search of several excellent English, French, and Spanish dictionaries revealed that there is no such word in those three languages, and, since they are the only three that I know, I must humbly ask that you supply a definition.

ostration-----
intellectual endeavor to coin a phrase.
from ostracize 1. the act of ostacizing, to exclude or banish, although now with hindsight and soberness i find that ostracation would be the more apt modification.
pinky, have fun with language, don't repress creativity by obsessing over dictionaries.
btw, you got the gist of the comment but failed to take it to heart when you demand a definition of a word i created.

back to the topic
privatized oil in the middle east, mostely pioneered by the brittish pre WW2 and perfected by the US afterward.

Ok now that we all know our history(as silly as a presumption that can ever be). Oil was simply the latest commodity in the Neo-Colonial economy, if you think the business done there was fair, you need to ask yourself, who were we westerners doing business with? i'll give you a hint, it wasn't a duely elected, or even independent saudi ect. government. US/UK interest were coercive, violent, and supported unpopular highly fanatical zeolots who rose to power.
Take in point the Shah in Iran, we helped propell him into power to keep a govt. favorable of our business with them. Sorry but I personally hold political ideals over business transactions, apparently the governments of europe and washington do not.

All war mongers will get what they deserve, including the US government.
