Help...casing not pinning
    #4316985 - 06/20/05 02:31 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I bought some rice cakes online and had fun with that. When the cakes were spent I decided to make a casing. I used a heavy vermicculite/peat moss base and compost manure for the top. This took about a month to colonize, since then i've had the cover off for about two weeks and no pinning is occuring. Does anything look off or what can I try/do? Thanks a lot!

throw that away.

what kind of rice cakes did you buy online?
brf jars (pre-made)?

your casing layer is not supposed to have any nutes in it (no comp cow manure)

man, i would like to give you some advice, bud, but there's a lot your missing.

that thing will not produce for you, trust me. cut your losses.

i'll be back in a second with some links to some info.

casing 101
PH
you need a buffer when using peat-based casings

poo is something that you use to spawn colonized substrate to. it then colonizes the sub, and then you have a larger amount.
when it's 100% colonized, then you case it.

this is not a simple casing, though.
they are merely substrate that can be crumbled or left whole, with a non-nutritious layer applied (1/4 as thick as the sub) for the purpose of keeping contams out, and moisture in.

edit: and if you click the image button on the preview page, then paste the url for your image in there, it will create thumbnails of your picture.
the page will load faster, and people can scroll down it in a reasonable amount of time.

can u say contaminated?

dont worry, i did the same thing once. i case with brf and verm, not a good idea. a casing is not supposed to have any nutrients in it..or it will contam. like that. throw that shit away.

ummm, yeah i agree with hengman, you definitely got contams. bagged stuff is by far not the best, did you pasturize it before use? in your using it you should have mixed the crumbled cakes with it, let that fully colonize and then add a casing layer. it would have been much better off. at this point in time i would toss it and start again.
lesson learned
peace
